Ableton + Cycling 74 = Max for Live

It gets briefly mentioned here: INTERVIEW WITH GERHARD BEHLES
Interesting...

So has anybody shelled out the 250 euros for this?

What are your thoughts. Would love to get some more knowledge in synth + effect programming and signal flow control but it seems quite pricey to me

I have Max/msp, Live, and M4L. It cost me about $100 since I already had Live and max/msp. If you enjoy working in Live and are looking for more diverse and unique ways to manipulate music/sounds it's perfect.

I used max/msp and Live separately before so for me it was a no brainer. I don't consider myself a programmer but do write a few max patches - the tight, glitch-free integration with Live is fantastic and exactly what I was looking for. Even if you are not into programming, the pluggo and M4L effects you get already made are pretty cool. Hope this helps.

it's worth it if you already know max and live or are a live user willing to put the hours into learning max.

the effects that come with it are cool but personally i wouldn't pay the money just to use the premade stuff. i ran the demo and dipped into it, it's a huge world of awesome but i just don't have the time atm to get into it.

programming max patches is cool but for me i decided i was better aiming that (limited) time on just producing my tracks.

I use Max4Live but not for sound tools, I use it to converting incoming data to outgoing data how & when I want (much like Logic's environment.) Since I'm not doing anything processor intensive with it I don't see any real performance hit, and can't wait until Live and the APC40 have a more fully fleshed out API.

If you are into Max, this is a really great environment for using it. You get all the scaffolding needed to bolt it properly into Live from the get-go. And patch settings recall automatically just as VST presets are recalled. It's a really nice concept. I think there is some difficulty getting non-Max-programers to benefit from it properly; that is, most of the benefit goes to folks who roll their own patches rather than folks who want to download prefab devices. But other than it, it's great. Highly recommended.
