| Lives for gear | How to emulate authentic 606 sounds? Hi everyone, For a realistic emulation of DR-606 drums sounds what would you recommend (beside buying the actual unit)? 1- using TR 606 samples (i.e. excellent Goldbaby stuff) in Kontakt and program it using round robin, random pitch variations and etc to get a more authentic analog feel? 2- using softsynth emulations of 606, i.e. Audio Realism synth? Cheers Farshad

| The Tape606 samples are excellent sounding, so excellent in fact that I sold my 606 after I got them. The AudioRealism 606 emulation is alright, but imo you will get better results with goldbaby's samples if you want realism. The 606 only does straight grid programming, ie: no shuffle/swing so keep your pattern locked to a hard 16th. Round robin is a good idea, but the pitch variation is unnecessary. The real 606 doesn't really drift in pitch. The voices are monophonic, ie: the cymbal will cut off its tail with fast 16ths, and the CHH will cut off the tail of the OHH. Programming a CHH over top of an OHH gives a weird accented CHH that has a somewhat longer decay than a normal CHH and is louder. The 606 also sums everything to a single mono output. Finally, try to get some solidstate into the sound, ie: bring it out of Battery and into the domain of transistors and capacitors and bring it back in at 24 bit resolution. Maybe sample the Tape606 sounds into your triton and record the output (in mono, a lá real 606) coming into your preamp, for example. hth. |

I did the same. I sold my 606 after I made the Tape606 sample pack. Hugo | |
