3 favourite or most interesting synth modules. (modular synth)

Ok, I'm in the planning stage last week or two of rearranging my Eurorack (mostly Doepfer) modular.
While up till now I had it set up as a one flexible synth, I now want to break it up into smaller parts each with a function and character. I'm using it more and more with other synths too, for different timbres.

Can you list your 3 favourite modules (from ANY modular) and tell why? We might get a nice discussion going, everybody has different ideas about it. thumbsup

cheers!

I'll start off....
favourite
1. Doepfer A-105 SSM LPF - ok it's "just" a filter. but it's nice and gritty when pushed with rich material, and it has a nice resonance peak in the lower midrange, when feeding off basslines. It can sound really "wet" too. Feeding it also sampled stuff. (turning my ES-1 into a wannabe SP-1200) Filters are a matter of taste of course.
2. Doepfer A-148 Sample and Hold - all kinds of purposes. there isn't one patch with at least one of these in it. To step audio but mainly to step (and sync) different functions as envelope triggers, control voltages to a (musical) grid, and create interesting new waveforms when feeding it high freq signals. (from oscillators) And mess around with PWM square waves. Can't live without it.

totally interesting:
3. Doepfer A-196 PhaseLockedLoop - Cool execution of this concept. The EAR Plan B m28 also got one, but totally different. The doepfer has more openings than a realdoll. I might have to get both (modules, not the doll). pretty nifty indeed

1: Technosaurus Selector Subhamonic Oscillator - there is nothing else like this on any other make and its got so much individual character and features

2: MOTM 440 Lo Pass - My fav filter - gorgeous !

3: Serge Dual Universal Slope Generator - The most multi functional module of all time

I have just started my modular set up to complement my Cwejman S1, but from the past 4 weeks my favourite of the bunch so far are :

1. Cwejman PH-4 - great modules outputting quadrature lfos, great for controlling pan or levels on my MX-4, controlling PWM for 4 diff oscs - lovely!

2. Cwejman FSH-1 frequency shifter - i have put new life into some of my old synths with this. been running my SH101 through the Cwejman AP1 then into this. i then set up the frequency, then run the cv out of the SH101 ( attentuated ) to track the frequency.

3. Harvestman Tyme Sefari - still trying to get to grips with this monster, but the few times ive got something going, its sounded lush.

Are there alot of modular users on GS? I usually use Muff Wigglers.

1. Flight of Harmony-Plague Bearer this is an odd filter type module that I have had great fun running lfo's first into a Malgorithm than into the PB.

2. I also love the Cwejman PH-4. Modulating all 4 levels and pan's on the MX-4s creates some gorgeous swirly action.I am not sure what it is about it, I mean it is not like I have never panned anything before . Possible it is the total control, I do not know but it is really nice.

@Tompty88 My Tyme Sefari sounds like a glitchy fuzzy beast, kind of a one trick pony I thought . Maybee I should spend some more time with it , I was kind of dissapointed when I got it.

I read the Carbon111 page. seems any combination of plugs in sockets has a different function. Of course it's an amazing module, however I have to ask, wouldn't this be confusing? wouldn't it be less economic, but more practical to use some more differentiated models?

how is it in sampling little snippets of sound and then use that as raw waveform? stepping you might get something of a wavetable? (or not?)
I never see examples of this.

I did see some youtube where the guy had something nice going with a loop.
as an waveform shaper (used as an effect) it sounds pretty hardcore (like all the Harvestman stuff). like a rocketplane with only up and down controls. not really the sound I'm after.

the malgorythm, yes, that one looks more controllable (or is it?).
not as cleancut as the doepfer, but I might need some more more weirdness in my system since it's mostly doepfer allready.

Blacet Research Mini Wave say... you want to cycle waves (or step cycle) how does that work out? how do you use it?

mmm I got a 15 V PSU lying around here somewhere.
here someone made a doepfer kit

Thanks for the welcome.

The Time Machine has been discontinued for a long time, but I still hope to grab one someday.

The Miniwave has various waveforms stored in banks; banks and waveforms can be voltage controlled. It's designed to track a sawtooth wave, but feeding it more complex waves gives back some grungy goodness.

I haven't tried to VC the banks/waves yet; so far I've just used it for getting some unusual, albeit static, sounds. Maybe I'll get off my butt soon and make a demo clip of VC'ing the waves and banks.

Cwejman VC-FCS, just imagining the possibilities, I've never seen anything like this with any compressor for that matter. I find the Plan B Evil Twin be the one filter I really want.

that would be neat
other module I'm considering is the Wiard Waveform city. I will have to eat dry bread for a month if I get that though..
The doepfer one is also an option, but I like to put in some other timbres now.

Rids: I had exactly the same idea but then about the dynamic equaliser.
So when I met Wowa on the Namm in Frankfurt (he was standing next to his machine ) I asked him if there could be a version with high headroom, so I could use it in a +4 environment too. Only thing then I'd have to do is balance it using some transformers. Or use his input module wich is made for that job.. Could be some interesting monster processor, just for mixing.
He was very positive about the idea. Shoot him an email, he's busy but takes time for this.

Modcan cv recorder
analog systems cv to midi
Serge tkb (does that count?)

Probably the list will change as I add things...

THAT.

Saw it demo'ed recently, with the Zeroscillator. Very cool.

Can't remember: does the cv recorder module include a joystick, or was that a separate Modcan module?

- Buchla 158 vco for the most crazy fm sound
- Wiard Noisering for modulations
- Serge Dual Universal Slope generators for all the stuff they can do.
