Yeh like a prophet 5 is that old skool 70's porn style sound

For pads and textures i love my 990 a lot. The 800 will give me more hands on control to both as well as having another slot for an expansion card. My 990 has the vintage card in there. Also it will be the main control jeyboard for the studio replacing my CS6X

I scored both for £500 which i think is a good buy really.

Nice synth. But few points to say.....

From economical point, maybe not the best choice. Because you already have the whole JD-800 inside 990.

If you hope to program JD-990 via JD-800, you'll have to hold your horses. More than half of JD-990 features can't be reached from JD-800 (editing) which brings you back to direct edit on 990.

Luckily editing goes pretty fast thanks to large screen, shortcuts, multiselect and the magic Value knob - when pushed, gives x10 per tick that even Capt. Picard wouldn't be ashamed of.

As of "another slot for an expansion card" with JD-800 - actually, JD-990 can take that card too. There is a slot on the front side. It's a shame that JD-800 does not take the SR-JV expansion cards, but its own format with very small waveform ROM. AFAIK only useful JD-800 card is "Strings", but it scores for around $200+. It features the Strings and Pizzicato samples of which both are included in JD-990. Other JD-800 cards are drums, brass and piano.

Speaking of a keyboard controller. JD-800 is missing one crucial control source: modulation wheel. But, you'll notice that problem as soon as you'll try to tweak the cutoff on the JD-990 via "mod wheel" that isn't there.

For all those reasons and more I sold my Roland JD-800 and kept my Roland JD-990.

I'd sure keep that CS6x and program the hell out of it. It has some great synthesis options and effects - many killer tones to be had!

cheers,
Ian

I loved the plg150 in the cs6x but there is no mac editor. The cs6x itself does not do it for me anymore. I love the 990 and £300 for an 800 is mad price really.

Didnt realise about the mod wheel though but hey ho,its more the full size keys for the studio and also being able to tweak some odf the 990 hands on although i have got pretty good at programming the 990 via the screen.

Fair enough. I use a Yamaha A5000 that I like very much, so the idea of a synth with its filters and effects with a good selection of ROM waves sounds quite good to me. If I had some spare coin, I'd make you an offer. Good luck with your studio!

cheers,
Ian

Well I'm joining the club. I just won a JD 800 of of eBay as well. It'll be my first vintage hardware synthesizer. I'm coming from the software world, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do. Any advice?

But don..
You can still do so much with the JD800, even without all the JD990 features.
The UI is just incredible on the JD800..

Think of the Microwave VS the Waldorf Wave.

Same sounds. I know because i have both (wave and microwave)
But the Wave has a fantastic UI and thats why people pay so much for them.

If you look at the JD800 VS JD990, im just suprised with all those lovely sliders and great UI that they are not worth at least £600-700.

Its one of my favourite synths regardless of price. The others are Waldorf Wave again mostly for the UI and also the Access Virus TI..

The JD990 is easier to program than a microwave, but its still a pain.
(I have a JD800 and JD990 with vintage)

I was in a music store (boring digital pianos everywhere) in 92 but in the corner there it was.
It looked like a control panel from the death star. thumbsup
Let's all buy one and invent a secret handshake.

Funny, calling this synth "vintage", I remember buying it new in 1990. Has it been that long? Dang. It's almost 20 yrs old!

For me, it was the first synth I owned where I could open and close the cutoff envelope using velocity or aftertouch. I got a lot of use from the Dance Drum card, programming/editing drum sounds from the front panel. The distortion effect can make for some very interesting sounds in single mode and pushing the pitch stick up does do some modulation. Portamento parameter is very useful. Dual LFO parameters assignable to four different waveforms also make for some interesting possibilities. Until recently, I always used mine in multi-mode so I could get more sounds out of it at one time when sequencing and the other two outs come in handy when using a mixer. When in this mode, listening to the waveforms in their raw state without effects can make programming a bit easier.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not sure at what age "vintage" begins, but I think its somewhere around 20 years. I'm sure there are people out there who remember buying their first Minimoog Model D.

I almost bought JD-800 from a friend even when i had JD-990. The thing looks too good.

But i couldn't stand the lack of Pan (per tone) which meant i had to forgot all the lush stereo pads and textures and the overall "wide sound" of JD-990. Because on 990 each of 4 tones inside a patch has its own stereo position which is crucial when 4 tones are enabled. By panning them individually, the content is preserved and distinguishable, as opposed to fixed central pan position that can hardly accept more than 2 tones, without turning them into a mud.

I'm just greedy having both although will be fun to control a fair few of the 990s parameters from the 800
