Pay Pal holding my funds for ransom!

So Pay Pal is holding my money from the selling the Bassline on Ebay. The buyer left positive feedback, but they're still holding my money! How do i get them to let it go? It says they will release the hold after 21 days, or the buyer leaves positive feedback, whatever comes first. Well, i got +feedback, and still nothing. How very annoying!

What's up with paypal jacking people's money? Do you all have low feedback or something?

This is why I don't do Paypal and why I rarely do ebay.

You have to call them and ask them to do a manual release, I've had to do it a couple times now. Annoying, but it would keep you safe if you were on the buying end.

Welcome to the new eBay. And all that while, they're collecting interest on your funds.

Exclamation Warning!

Seller beware.

I sold a great guitar to some nutter "collector" who then wanted to return it because it wasn't perfect... (Uh, it's used, kinda the point of eBay) ... and this is WITH me taking detailed photos and SAYING it wasn't perfect!

(The irony is, it's in nicer condition that half the guitars that are "new" in stores)

Oh, and with ALL that info, I said, no returns. Guess what?

As a seller, you have NO rights.

This is NOT hyperbole, I was on the phone with eBay and the guy said as much (and this is with me being civil and conversational) ... if a buyer wants to return something for any reason at all, they just freeze your funds.

YOU have to refund. You CAN'T leave negative feedback, but THEY CAN.

I fvucking hate that place... it's a great concept, love what it "could" be, but the reality sucks.

Oh, by the way, I have 225 transactions and perfect feedback... then this shiitbag.

Yeah man, this is what I mean about the new Ebay. You have zero rights as a seller in the new nanny state "we're just a marketplace" Ebay. Not only that, but a buyer can do whatever they want to the item and -if- you get it back, it could be jacked up and there's nothing you can do. I'd make sure that guitar has the original pickups for example. They treat sellers like shit, unless you're some conglomerate selling cheap Chinese junk.

It sucks these days. Simple as that.
I have been ebaying since the beginning and had a great period maybe 6/7 years ago where I was doing well buying and selling.
These days, I can't even afford to list stuff without being shafted. I wanted to put a guitar on ebay.co.uk and it cost me £7 listing fee (with no fancy extras, just photos etc) and the final selling fee would have been £28 or so on a £300 guitar.
So, before paypal, over 10%. Then paypal take their percentage. all the time as a seller, having the thought that I can be screwed out of my money by paypal when they see fit. They already locked an account I had because I live in Belgium but have a German credit card. I asked them why and they said nothing they can do. Blocked. I have had the card for years and when I moved, just wanted to keep it. Paypal say no.
So, I had to start a new account. Absurd.
They are making it so annoying and pricey to sell, it will go wrong. Someone will push in somehow.

Dont blame you..the combined ebay/paypal fees are ridiculous now. Concerning the orignal problem you had; I would have either just have returned his money straight away and said no deal..or have said I want positive feedback right away and money cleared in paypal or no deal.

I'd never even consider releasing the goods without having the money? Paypal can

I wasn't in a hurry, so it didn't bother me. It's only when it took 2 days after feedback was left i became concerned.

This guy at work turned me on to selling on Amazon. Just CDs and books and stuff but it's been a good experience so far. I haven't looked into selling music equipment on there but you can already buy new music gear so I don't see why not.

I just sold several things on Ebay in the last few weeks. I had two transactions that PayPal held my money. One I had to get them to manually release, the other released after the 3 days after positive confirmation the package was delivered. Make sure you add the tracking number on PayPay's site, not just Ebay.

Talking with Paypal to get my funds release was pretty painless. The lady was very nice and friendly and I had waited 3 days, so she manually released my money.

you were lucky..it's far to dangerous to let go of your goods in my book..what if they dont leave you a positive? what if they eventually send you goods back..but broken or damaged? where do you stand then? I asked paypal and they said you whave to get witnessed statements from a police officer..

what the hell? imagine the hassle, the time wasted, even if you do eventually get compensated..which is very unlikely.

never let anything out the door till you have the cash.

If you have less than 100 feedback, PayPal will hold your funds for 21 days before funding it to you. Pretty standard practice.

To be safe, I keep all tracking info and take pictures of the unit before I send it out (usually with the printed shipping label). If anybody wants to take a claim on me, I have the evidence to back myself out.

I've never had a problem with PayPal/eBay ever. Well, actually, I did once, back in eBay's early stages (2001). But I won't let one bad apple ruin the bunch...

I had the same thing happen to me. This buyer bought a older MPC from me and he paid by 'E-CHECK" so they placed a hold on it. He had my product but I didn't have the money for a week. I had to call and get them to manually release it.

I read their new policies and it sucks and I told the rep this. Like u said, NO FEEDBACK if they stiff you. You can't even reply if they leave negative. We all know the pranksters and jokesters that the net provides, so you're kinda screwed. I don't think I'll be selling things on there for a while. It kinda soured the experience with them. Sellers don't have a sense of security anymore.

If u do sell... don't accept e-checks... I believe thats when u get held up and withdrawn your funds right after you get it. So if refunds is asked for "for any reason", you can go into detail a little better.

Just 2 cents...

The one point in eBay's favor is this:

if you list something w. no reserve, it will reach the maximum amount of interested buyers on the planet and it will sell with minimum hassles to you.

I'd rather not add up all the time/effort spent posting and responding to ads on the Gearslutz classifieds, Harmony Central, craigslist, etc, etc. There's 100's of tirekickers that ask for details, want photos of you standing by the machine, and then never bother to follow up or want it for practically nothing.

In the past, eBay fees+PayPal fees were around 6% of the total. On average, my sale prices on eBay are way more than 6% over the other avenues.

I'm not saying it's an ideal, trouble-free system (I've had my share on non-paying winners), but if you really need to sell something, it's the place to go.

I would hate to go back to the "thrifty nickle" classified local papers. Ebay has made my life much easier and with about 300 transactions and 100% positive feedback, I've only had two small problems.

However - as others have pointed out, many of their policies have changed recently, and now greatly favor the buyer. I get a queasy feeling every time I sell something on ebay now. Will this be the one where I get ripped royally? My attitude towards ebay has changed greatly over the last 6 months, I now see it as a last resort when selling. This has changed my buying/selling habits and I will gladly jump ship should any alternative come along.
