It must be said that the Logic 8 compressor is pretty darn good. Largerfelds SSL presets are also worth grabing

+1 on the Waves SSL and from what I can recall the demo I tried of the Waves API wasn't too shabby.

Out Of interest has anyone used the Abbey Road TG12413 Limiter on electronic music, I make tech/house and wondered if it would be suitable for club style production.

Not that its bad, it just wasn't the best for the situations I needed. For electronic stuff maybe try the PSP Vintage Warmer or the PSP Xenon limiter. Those are both amazing plugs.

My favorite compressor depends completely on the given audio material, and how or to what degree am I going to apply the compressor to achieve my desired audio objectives.
You can rant about your favorites, but I have discovered it really depends on if you are compressing a pipe organ solo or reggae music. It also depends on whether or not you are using a low or high ratio and gain make-up. Some compressors are nice with 3:1 but that same compressor is lousy at 8:1 and you can't assume if it's nice at one end it will be nice at the other end. It also depends on if you are running that compressor in series or parallel. (sometimes 2 or 3 compressors in SERIES, not necessarily the same compressor and you have to know the theory behind your settings) can achieve excellent results. It also depends on how much if any color you want added.
See why it's difficult to give an honest accurate reply? Maybe someone should ask about their favorite EQ's.
With that said, and in no order....
Waves Ren Comp.
Waves multiband (used maybe once a month)
Waves C4
SSL Comp
API Comp
UA Fairchild
UA LA-2A (I will admit that is often a go-to for pianio)
1176LN
The Rocket (By Stillwell but mostly for problem transients)
I could probably have more favorites, but after many years I am still learning to really LEARN and know these tools, know their limits, and how and when to apply them. There could be many other incredible compression tools, but if I don't know them well enough to achieve my audio objectives, and really learn them through experiences, then I can't really comment on them.
I apologize for being anal, but this is the best reply I could give.

Sonnox Dynamics is hands down the best all purpose plugin. Closest to the analog vibe and colour is Nebula.

| A lot depends on the sounds and what you want out of them
For general purposes, I have always favored the Waves C1 Compressor for its
all-in-one features, and the way they have designed in so many options and
possibilities in a single plug-in. But it's best for situations where maximum
transparency is the desiderata - great for accoustic sources but maybe too
subtle for electro stuff. Again, depending: I've enjoyed the hell out of it on some
Metasynth sounds. For totally un-subtle in-your-lap compressor effects, I still
like the 1176 emulations, pretty much any of them from Bomb Factory to UA.
Recalling that it's probably the comp heard on most pop vocals over the last
30 years, it's the thing you need to put bass sounds over the top and yet leave
some room for other low-end noizes, or any time one element of the texture
has STAY PUT, wherever that is. On buses, my most-used is the T-Rax "tube"
compressor; it'll do ya for functionality and a really nice tube-like color. If you
have a bit more money to spend, Trillum Lane's Agro is great almost anywhere,
from single tracks to buses. I've had a lot of fun with Digidesign's SMACK too.

UAD 1176 (drums, guitars)
UAD LA-2A (vocals)
UAD LA-3A (bass)
Sonnox is very good and all purpose, just not as vibe-y.

t-racks3 red-opto much more x-treme.
uad-1 its great, but i like more the 1176 emulation from bombfactory, but i dont like pt
havent heard the powercore 27.4c , or the vinco in direct comparation.

crysonic spectraphy
better than sonictimeworks mastering compressor
waves L1,L2,L3
sonnox
and any other.
better = fast, trasnparent, warm if you like or not, hard to distort, no compressed mids, etc...
but havent done an A/B test against the new tracks3, uad precision limiter, or the powercore system 6000

for Chemical Brothers style drums/live bass, but not so much for electronic drums.
