Thread Starter | where to start with beats/samples?
hello i'm into IDM/breakcore/industrial sounds. i'm starting to create my own songs and i need something to create beats. what should i use? software drum machines or samples? and where to start with samples? i know i love the sound of Arhythmia samples - they are so raw. any reccomendations? cheers

Im not a big fan of drum machines, Im much more a sample guy when it comes to beats. Waldorf Attack was the one I demoed long time ago...it sounds nice but its not my cup of tea. For sequencing Im using Cubase 4, and my beats are usually made with Stylus and Battery2 (sampler), but many times I end up importing samples directly into cubase's audio tracks cause I like to edit the waves and use all the nice editing features that cubase offers. Thread Starter | both of them are, i believe... the one i liked is volume 2, i believe. well, i haven't heard too much high quality samples, so maybe they're boring when compared to other... but if they are - hell yeah, i wanna hear those interesting |

guess NI's synthetic drums really gonna please you. high qualitty and very weird, odd sounds that suites very well for idm productions. i really appreciate idm, really love autechre. wish I could have some free time to do something in that vein....but I always manage to stick some weirdness into my psy and house sounds. |

| Can you get at the raw WAV files with NI's Synthetic Drums? I bought Stylus RMX and was pretty damn disappointed that all the samples were encrypted within the plug-in or something. Means I have to chop the shit up in Recycle. I was hoping I could just drop 'em into my MPC...... |

fine packages for sure. (there's NI's Synthetic Drums vols. 1 & 2, can't really say which one I like/use most.) worth every penny! |

reason has a "glitch" section in it's readrum samples collection, and there are some nice tweaky drum sets you can download from their website as well. guru is an excellent drum programmer, and the standard sample banks have many, may sounds i think would fit quite well in an idm-oriented song - it almost seems oriented that way (i have to import a LOT of samples from goldbaby etc into guru for using it on my rap/r&b productions) |

a good sample library to build a good battery kit always makes my day. for brainstorming, triggering the midikeyboard (especially makes sense with an auto-groove- or tight-quantisation supported from the DAW - logic has it) if you are up for IDM, you may predefine yourself a distortion/compression channel to jam through.
