House/Techno conga samples?

may be a bit of a stupid thread here, but here it goes anyway. I'm looking for the typical house/techno conga sample, punchy, not very realistic sounding. I had also thought that a lot of these sample could be sequenced from a TR-727 giving them an unrealistic quality. Any suggestions for some conga stuff for house and techno would be very much appreciated.

I guess you've tried the 727 sounds? Run them thru buckets of distortion for nose bleed fun! For a more synthetic tone; 808 congas. Also great for basslines! load em in your sampler & tune em up.

These days I mostly hear 'real' congas. Chop up some loops & grab a sample set with more than the usual hi/lo, open/slap variations & sequence with an x0x style step sequencer. To make them sound less like faux congas tryna be real & more synthetic filter em (LP/BP) & modulate pitch with envelopes or LFOs

Edit;

A cool thing to try is rolling your own with a synth. Start with a pure sine wave with a short, sharp amp envelope & modulate the pitch & filter settings. This way you can build sounds to fit your tunes & make a bunch of variations.

Another sound I really like is the 808 snare with the tone all the way down, very punchy! kind of a wierd sound on its own but works well in a kit & can often fill the gaps between other sounds.

the linndrum 1&2&9000
the yamaha ry30 with house and rap , dance & sould cards
ry10 nice too,
the alesis hr-16:B and Hr-16
roland r-70
reason 3/4
roland tr
casio rz-1
some older keyboards & rack units like korg 01w/fd, etc... emu proteus 1/2/3,
i dont like much the roland d-110 or mt-32
etc...etc...etc...
all have nice congas, kicks, and stuff

most of the samples you can find free in the web are the worse recordings ever,
the samples in the zerog analogy dvd probably are the same free samples found in the internet.

make your own samples, if you want better quality.

Yamaha RY-30 (very housy)
and/or
Emu Procussion (brilliant for dance stuff)!

oh yes and the Roland R-8 of course!

You don't have to buy the actual units since samples are easy to find.

Cheers

A great suggestion! I had one of these. I think this is one of the most under rated drum machines ever.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The E-muprocussion and the Yamaha RY30 will be something to look into, and well all of the emu stuff, I haven't checked them out at all really.

And I do agree, that most free samples on the web are very poor recordings.

Will also have to try and chop up some conga loops some time, have had friends that say that its the most fun that they have while working on music is chopping up conga loops.

Synthesizing congas seems fun, and very tweakable, don't have anything that could do it right now, but I have an evolver on the way, will probably be one of the first things I try after checking out all of the presets.

I guess a good example of what I'm after is in DJ Dan - N20 here is a link on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj_2Ejavv34 , seems like the R8 would work well, nice unrealistic tom sounds too

TR-626 has a nice latin section. Its got an older TR Sound, but not bad really. Gold baby samples are nice, I believe they have the Linn Drum and the 626, quite a few congas in there Analog pack.

+1 for the 727, classic house latin kit.

I have the full Yamaha RM50 sample set, which has a bunch of latin perc samples. Most of which made their way into the RY30. The 626 perc sounds are just about as good as the 727's. They're really similar. If anyone wants the RM50 sample set, i'll post the link. I sampled all the drum sounds before i sold it.

if i'm not mistaken, this sound is featured in the hall & oates classic ballad, "one on one". i always loved the 808 on that track.

phil collins, how have you been?!!!

remember that tune "take me home", on which he made an absurdity of the "phil C. reverse-gated reverb drums" by over-applying the crap out of the technique to a tom-heavy 909 pattern? wow. he even went hog-wild on the 909 rim shot in that track too. jumper, meet shark; that seemed to be the end of his obsession with the gated reverb sound.
