Thread Starter | Electribe ES-1 MKII and ER-I vs. Electribe EMX/ESX just for fun... Hi, So every now and then I like to take a break from my "real" production and just bust out with some beats, which can sometimes be actually not too shabby. Anyway, right now I got an Electribe ES and ER... I can easily sell those two and buy either an Electribe ESX OR a EMX. Question is: is it worth it? If so, which one should I go for? I'm pretty up to date with the specs and there is really not anything specific I want to do (so please don't say "well, it depends what you wanna do..." I just wanna have fun, relax and bust out with some good-sounding sequences without too many head aches... dont' get me wrong, ES + ER = fun, but I'm just wondering if there is more fun to be had with the ESX/EMX. Thanks! |

| I also have an ES-1 and ER-1, and I wouldn't do it. In fact, I'm trying to find a cheap EA-1 mk1 to have all the originals. Particularly, the ER-1 is one of those synths I'd never get rid of. |

| Lives for gear | my only tribe is the emx. It is a very fun box. I can't bring myself to part with it because it is so intuitive and easy to use though in pratical terms I can't see myself recording anything off it. Note entry is a big pain in the ass and the quantization sucks. BUT--it has personality. I'd ditch the E-S and keep the E-R. |

| Moderator | I like my ES-1. feed it all kinds of stuff and watch it churn out freaky tunes. But.. I got it because I wanted a sampler ![]() |

| electribe differences... I used to own the er1 es1 and the ea1 and now currently just have the new EMX1. It is great but it doesn't replace either the ea1 or er1. The sound has more of everything but i still miss the others. I would say that the earlier electribes have a lighter more liquid sound whereas the newer ones are more "professional" sounding. I think there is room for both really in the way a Juno 106 isn't replaced by a Minimoog. I'm currently saving for the ESX1 that matches my EMX1 along with re buying the original ones. They complement each other very well. However i wouldn't but the es1 again as the ESX1 does alot more and the same. Just my 2c worth! ![]() Lifer |

| I just got an EMX-1. So far i'm really pleased with it. Was surprised to find the previous owner had installed the 12AX7EH Electro Harmonix Tubes in it.

| I don't think the EMX and ESX sound as "pro" as the original Electribes ER1 and ES1 did. EMX & ESX sound more like toys to my ear... The original Electribes have a raw, unprocessed quility to their sound while the EMX and ESX sound over-processed and thin in comparison. |

| well, since someone else bumped this thread, i'll add this: the 12AX7EH are the original, factory tubes in both the EMX and ESX. |

| You've said you have fun with the originals, so keep them. They obviously work for you. I personally have the ER-1 and EA-1mk2. I love the ER to pieces, while the ea's onboard synth is fun, it lacks a lot of things. Thing is I enjoyed programming the ea, so I kept it and bought a Virus C which I program mostly off the ea. I would recommend hanging on to both machines and grabbing a mean synth which you can program with one of your electribes rather than lose something that you already know works for you. |

| Yeah the 12AX7 Electro-Harmonix are the standard ones. I just replaced mine a little while ago as they were done. I just installed a pair of 12AX7 (ECC803) JJ Electronic valves. They have a slightly longer plate, and the output is a warmer and does not distort as much even with a high gain. |
