Apparent pitch modulation effects that don't really change the pitch

i heard many tracks that have some kind of pitch modulation in the melody, but if you listen again the melody does not really change in pitch... it just feels like it is changing in pitch.

how can this be achieved?

sync?
modulation of one melody with pitch change and cutting the fundamental and then layering with another melody that stays more stable?
filter?
eq?

Not sure which bit of the track you're refering to here ?

The bass line / riff does move about between the 7th and the minor 3rd but the sound is a bit of pulse width modulation with a bit of stereo analogue chorus.

"The bass line / riff does move about between the 7th and the minor 3rd..."

I agree with this, but still believe that the notes are surrounding the C (1st) and this is not played normally... it's a special effect...

Try to copy it, and you'll see, it ain't easy...
