Headphones

I need a set of headphones for around $100 that would be great for composing, tracking, production. I would like them to be around ear's and closed. I thought the sennheiser HD-280's were good but was informed that they wouldn't fit my "industrial" style needs, that they were more for DJ'ing.

So, any suggestions?

For $100 there is only one choice in my mind. The Sony MDR7506.
If you have a little more to spend.
Either the Audio Technica ATHM50 for $160 or the Sennheiser HD25-1 II for $200 (I'm buying a set this month)thumbsup

I did some research on those MDR7506 and you might just be right. I'll have to do some more reading but there getting some great reviews.

I'd try them on first if possible, they can feel rather different. Some older sony MDR I remember really clamping down with some force. The AT M50 phones work pretty well. Maybe look at Beyerdynamic as well. Next time around I'd go for the style that doesn't press against the ear but instead leaves a space for it.

I'm a BIG fan of the ATH-M50's. I strongly suggest you give them a listen.

Alo check out Fostex TR40P's. The only real quality product of theirs I ever tried. Refreshigly free of hype in the sound unlike say some Sennheisers. Sony or Fostex for closed ones I reckon.

I love my HD25s
got good results with Beyerdynamic too. AKG also nice
I don't think any pair of headphones, or monitors suits one style better than others.
they just have to be flat in freq response and as neutral as possible.

you might be able to get a pair of Beyer Dynamic DT 770 pro80's for around that used. I have a lot of headphones and none get used anymore. 1 pair of great headphones is better than a closet of mediocre ones.

Sony 7506 is very good. I use them all the time, but find it hard to mix the bass and kick. I prefer the HD25-1 to verify the bass and kick as you can hear the attack more than on the 7506...
