Jupiter pads a la Lifelike?

for the love of god... i've been 4hrs at this and not getting the results i want. I was pretty sure when i got my Jupiter8v i would get this 80s retro pad sound that i'm after but my lack of experience with the synth is causing more headaches than planned.

I think its just two saw oscs, some modulation on the cut off(very slow) and some phaser/flanger on it with a medium lfo... but guys i'm just not getting close here.

anyone have any ideas i'd really appreciate it. I do understand its about 3 layers deep (from what i can hear) but its the prominent one i'm after.

1. Buy a real one.

2. Use what you have, but buy and put it through something like an old Roland 325 Flanger or Roland Dimension D Flanger to give it analogue life.

If you can, buy a Jupiter 4 or Jupiter 6, use those or mix them WITH the virtual.

Just ideas.

I love Lifelike - what is that tune...not heard that one before...?

To be honest that doesnt appear a great example of a lifelike pad - purely because for most of that clip its totally drowned in phaser...

Have you tried a PWM pad with lots of phaser? At the end it sounds like there is a high/band pass filter pad coming in also...try playing around with the filters and push up the resonance-theresounds like some slow envelope filter cutt-off movement also...

Lifelikes pads are generally just big analogue pads with some roland chorus or vintage phaser...

Lifelike at So indie it hurts

I have to admit I found it hard to replicate his pad sound on 'so electric' but I was using a Prophet 5 emulation so....

I was thinking he pro used a Jupiter but didnt know for sure - where did you find this out? Is it a jp8 or jp6?

edit: been listening closer - sounds like there are layered pads in the intro - one organ style analogue pad and another thinner one in the background - theres also some ambient reverb there..

Then at the change there is another organ-style pad with some pitch lfo on it...

Synth Secrets

Synthesizing Hammond Organ Effects: Part1

try those...but you will need a GOOD sounding flanger/phaser plugin to get similar sounds...try Soundtoys or Audiodamage...

IMO although it would make it easier - you dont HAVE to buy a load of estoteric analogue gear to get a similar sound

hi man i appreciate you taking the time to post all this the track is Super Mal - Light Years (Lifelike remix). I actually just finished a mix for them on their last tune but when he sent me lifelikes remix i was in awe.

i have no hard proof that this is a jupiter pad other than my ears. i've played many chords on many boards and it just struck a 'jupiter' chord with me (yeah that's prob the best joke i've made all week).

I own some UAD Cards and never demo'd the roland dimension D on here so i'm going to give it a shot this morning. I'm also giong to try running Atmosphere thru a few of these UAD phaser/flanger plugs and see what i come up with.

edit: dimension D is just a chorus plug : /

On the topic of Lifelike...

Has anyone got the interview with Lifelike in Future Music Magazine issue 204?

Apparently he lists the gear that he uses and explains some of his production techniques.

Anyone seen it and care to share what the man says?

OK.. from memory in that interview he listed Roland MKS units, 50 and 80. Yamaha TX802. Pictured with a JX8P.. so im guessing he uses one. Jupiter 8. Fairlight. PPG. JD990.

mks-80 can do excellent pads, as can the jx8p...still

neither are a jupiter 8! it's just pure amazing the first time you hear some of those real jp8 pads....you won't find something like that in software....

http://xero.cc/jup303808.mp3 ohhhh something i made the other day messinga round with the jp8 and 303 and 808.

one of the very subtle things the jp8 can do is apply the LFO to the VCA, i find this often adds more magic to the sound.

in the interview he mentions the JD990 for bass, Roland Juno 106 for pads & arps & he does mention the Jup8 in online interview that i can't seem to find at the moment.

btw i bought an Ensoniq Dp4 after reading he likes the flanger on it and running my 106 thru the Dp4 i get close but the tone still isn't perfect. i've moved on from learning the pad, it's his lead sound in his Relation mix that has my brain ticking now:

starts come in around 1:50 sounds like some great PWM w/ a flanger layer below it?

Sounds like a mini on bass jx8p on smooth chorus pads and something like a 106 for the pwm chords higher up with the dp4 doing its thing.. healthy dose of sidechaining.. some ppg sprinkled in near the end

Listening to some more of his stuff on my monitors not my crappy laptop speakers, id bet he is still using an atari and midi .... doesnt sound like its hit the converters much and the midi timing is tight ... and no plastic sounding vst's... probably live midi on a desk mixed down to tape and then mastered to cd/ mp3..
