Forbidden Loops

So how many ppl here use loops or write their own loops with synths?
Seems like alot of ppl hate loops but I love em. So many great things you can do with them, chop, slice, dice, stir fry for a delicious treat!
Anybody here maybe sell their own loop libraries?

I write my own loops and I have a Chicago House Loops CD out now with 1200 royalty free loops of synths, live strings, live horns, TB 303 loops, vocals, live percussion, etc, etc. link is in my sig. I've been waiting for someone to ask this question, lol.

ill make my own and use from library.. why not? "its not YOU who made that hihat pattern.. oh my god your such a poser"

but you can hire a pro drummer to play on your song and thats ok!??

as religion and globalizaion.... (went too far i know) there is a double edge sword..

loops can inspire and u chop, mangle and create something completely new youd never achieve by not using a loop. and/or in some cases, presets and some loops are made by people that do that for a living or just plain do it better than you. those northern Europeans that spend long winters underground programming loops and presets/ sound designers from companies are sure going to make a better loops then you do.

at the same time.. its their loops. and you cant "garageband compose" or be slave to a loop or it will sound plain vanilla and not so good.

so i say that loops are a good starting point and help out but if you are grabbing a guitar or piano chord progression and thats your verse or chorus then youd better practice some more.

but if you can chop that chord progression into their individual chords, DSP them and put them in your sampler and play them then thats cool.

The worst thing about loops to me is that I can spend 5 hours writing a song without loops and than put my DAW's loop markers around like 1/2bar or a full bar and it sounds way sicker than the rest of the song.

I need to figure out a way to start cutting my songs into loops as a workflow.

Seems like good stuff I wouldn't think of in my head happens every time I mess about with those loop markers and keep the loop time short.

BTW, loop is a compositional term, samples are what you guys are talking about.

exactemundo

JBuehler, try to take one element of the loop (hihats, or bassline) by filtering/gating beatslicing it. keep the positioning (feel of the groove) intact, and start from there. You can later change the groove if it fits better with the rest.
Works for me. A good collection of loops has different elements that can be used as building blocks. Complete loops aren't very inspiring. At least for me.
Hope that helps, isn't too vague.

Sounds like you like the concept of loops to me. I usually always tweak something for awhile and then render to a loop so I can play with it some more without worrying about settings or cpu.

I feel exactly the same way. Pulling up an acoustic drum part, slicing it up beat by beat, you wind up with your own kit that has nothing to do with the original pattern. Plus, you get four or five samples of the same kick drum/snare and a bucket of hi-hats, all at slightly varied velocities; it gives you a sort of pre-acoustically-matched set of samples. I do this far more often than opening up a drum machine and picking out a handful of disparate samples to try and match up. (Plus, it's a lot of work, which soothes the part of my ego that says "this is cheap! you're such a hack!")

Just dropping a loop into a song without cutting it up seems weird to me, more because I imagine all the other songs out there that must have exactly the same part sitting in them than because it seems unoriginal. I do this with ridiculously simple bits, though - repetitive shaker loops and that kind of thing. I'd have taken an identical pair of samples and made exactly the same pattern on my own...

So I guess my point is, using loops and making your own drum parts are not mutually exclusive processes

being a huge DnB fan here all my tracks contain loops.

sometimes used as they are, more often than not there chopped up manually in SX. for example my latest track samples an acoustic gtr from an old school track cut up and re-ordered to fir the time of the track. without this the track would fall on its arse. im more than happy to use loops, and happy to use samples from other peoples tracks (yes, i clear (almost) all of them)
