Anyone here sampled midi-song files before??

I've heard of other people doing it, and am starting to tinker with the idea..
I'm talking about extracting chord progressions/bass lines etc then re-arranging them.

What are your thoughts on this?

i had a program that once converted guitar / drum tabs into midi equivalents. It was fun, but ultimately not very useful (for me anyway).

I tried to take parts of midi files and glom them into tunes (jump + HYPERSAW ), but I found it easier to make them from scratch due to the insanely poor quality of most midi files. There are cd's that have midi patterns etc, but they all seemed kinda boring to me. My take anyway.

I guess logic has those sound loops--is that what you mean? Always felt like cheating to me. nice to plop down the drums though when you just want, say, breakbeat generic style for some basslines and go back and create your own. That i've done--also lends itself to jamming out. However I have to watch it with the keys because my chops aren't that great yet, and so it becomes patently obvious when the classically trained pianist waltzes in the mix

I'd rather hear a cleverly chopped/mangled sample. At least with this approach, the inspiration for the track is acknowledged upfront.

'Rearranging' someone else's idea is f'n lame. My respect for an 'artist' drops to zero when I can tell they've just lifted someone else's work.

yeah, why not?

it sounds like a bit of fun, actually.

who cares if you started with an empty sequence, or a busy sequence, if you end up with something new?

as long as you're a bit tasteful about it, and spend enough time changing things around so it sounds like you, and not just like you ripped the riff out of someone else's song.... you don't want to end up coming off like the rogue traders.....

I tried this years ago and ended up spending way too much time editing midi parts, rather than making music. It just became very boring very quick !

Try it and you will know what i mean.

The appeal of sampling audio is in the sound I think.
Crunchy drums, or nice keyboard textures etc.....
If it's not about sounds, and just copying someone's midi, I'd rather write something myself.
