What samplers out there are 8 bit?

I love the whole crunchy 8-bit sound. Especially on Hi-Hats..
I'm diggin the sound of my SC DrumTraks but want to get a sampler with similiar convertors so I can load in my own sounds.

I have an SP-12 but that is 12 bit. Wanna lose 4 more bits!
BTW I don't want to use a bit-crusher, because I don't believe they produce the same results..

You're right, bit-crushing to me is like a different thing altogether, a different sound.

For 8-bit, maybe an Ensoniq Mirage? If you're feeling up to using hexadecimal on a 2-digit display, that is. The great sound pays off though, if you want it bad enough.

EMAX is some kind of 8bit. It samples at 12bits but converts it to 8 bits for storage.

It sounds great BTW!

Orchestron, EMU II, Akai S-612, Ensoniq Mirage, Fairlight, Synclavier, Linn, Mellotron, Master Studio Coll., FZ-1, DSS-1.

I think most of them are 8bit

vemberaudio.se - shortcircuit

shortcircuit can load:RIFF/ wave-files (8/16/24/32-bit & 32-bit float, mono/stereo at any sample rate)

Also a great soft sampler !

Jomox 999 (and I think 888 as well) holds 8 bit samples for hihats and another 4 categories, and process these samples with VCA envolopes.

Well,a third of them. The Orchestron and Mellotron are analog. The Synclavier and Fz-1 are 16 bit and the DSS-1 is 12 bit. The Fairlight 1 and 2 are 8 bit, the Fairlight III is 16 bit. The only Linn that could sample is the Linn 9000 and that's 12 bits IIRC.
And what is a "Master Studio Coll." ?

Uh... just record 24dB quieter, then gain it up digitally by 24dB. Then you'll only use 8-bits of resolution.

Hell you could do this with a 24-bit sampler. Might hit some other problems with noise floor, but you're not looking for clean are you?

you'd have to pass it through a cranked behringer eurorack to get the true magic out of it.

hey Jonny,

saw your post about the mbase...and well, maybe you should consider a 888/999. The price it a bit steep but if you are already considering getting the mbase...it'd be a nice way to have all your drums in one box and be able to store patterns etc. And I'm almost sure the sound wouldn't disappoint you if you're in the 8-bit crunchy mood already...

The sampler on it is really good and the samples get a really great vibe in it. The snare and hats also sound great. it's a well thought out machine in general and definitely a good beat workstation.

just a (slutty) thought...

Don't forget the Casio SK series! Both Casio SK-1 and SK-5 are 8-bit. And they are very dirty!

BTW you can fill your DrumTraks with your own sounds if you want to. Get an Oberheim Prommer. I guess a modern EPROM programmer would work to if you can get the samples in the right format...

Hi-hats are cool, but if you haven't tried 8-bit analog BASS samples you don't know where the real fun starts!

A cheap alternative without a sampler (but if someone already has 8-bit samples collection):

8-bit samples in 1:1 can be played on the DAW (softsamplers), but interpolation needs to be DISABLED. Then they are in 1:1 as original. From that point reproduction only depends on: 1) antialiasing filters and 2) transposition algorithms - implemented in the software which will be used.

Coincidently i've found online a huge collection of 8-bit samples from period 1988-1991 (10532 of them to be exact). Not only that i love those vintage samples from Acid House and early Techno era, but when i discovered how bass sounds @ 8 bit i was blown away.
