Thread Starter | ARP Odyssey or Moog Little Phatty?? Has anyone dealt with both of these machines? I'm seriously having trouble debating whether to go back to the vintage gear route for that sound, or to finally buy a modern analog synth. So many advantages for the LP: Brand new, patch memory, sounds pretty good, etc. And yet, I hear mp3 samples of an ody which aren't even all that inspiring but they still have a certain life about them. Also, there seems to be a darkness/sinister character in the ody that I haven't heard in any of the Moog LP examples I've heard. It's relatively hard to find mp3 examples of the odyssey. There don't seem to be that many around; Does anyone have a few mp3 samples that will push me over the edge to take my chance on another old synth? |

| Obvious Gearslutz answer: Save up and get both!!! I have a voyager and as phat as it is, it doesn't have alot of individuality IMO. I'm sure others will disagree with me though.. I recently bought a Roland SH-2 (also 3 Oscillators) and that things is the goods! Has a lovely warm sound which I actually prefer over the Voyagers.. They both have their place though. |

But to answer your question, if you plan on playing live, get a Moog LP. If you are a studio-only artist, I'd get both. I mean, the LP is probably the best sounding modern analog to date. That synth is going to be around for a long time, whereas the shelf-life ov an Oddy, as amazing as they sound, is getting shorter every year. There is a noticeable difference in modern analog and vintage analog synthesizers, I appreciate both equally. | |

| Gear maniac | That demo sounds great. I identified with one ov the comments left on that demo where somebody said Moogs sound like wood while the Arps sound like concrete and steel. There is a nice metallic shine to Arp synths. |

| I would get the Phatty. Moog is updating the firmware again, so it will have more bugfixes and features and they are also doing certain hardware mods now for it. I think the Arp Odyssey sounds great, but my opinion is that they are a bit nasty design wise, those sliders generally don't work that well. I would get a Pro One before an Odyssey, as I already have the Phatty. I am looking seriously at something Future Retro, but I don't know what yet.... rachel |

| Back in the seventys i owned both.It def has a sound of its own but i was glad to get rid of it.My mini still gets lots of use.I have played a lil phatty as well and i would go for that. The used arps tend to get beat up.Dust in the sliders, vco drift. You could get a virtual 2600 which i like alot.Depends on what you are after. Both have a place in the studio imo! | I had an old original 2600 for a few years recently. Never had any quality issues with it at all.

| ARP no doubt! So fat and acidi... I love it. But the Little Phatty isn't bad at all either! It's a bit more tame I dare say *ducks*... Different animals. I have to say I like the white one more though. |

| Odyssey is an all time classic. Great synth, better than a Minimoog in my book (not as fat, but more interesting sounding, more versatile). Little Phatty... blehhh... give me an original Minimoog. Get a Mini and an Odyssey.... wow, what a pair. Synths of that vintage sound so organic and alive. Love 'em.
