Thread Starter | Arpeggiator
I apologise in advance if this question is ridiculous but I was playing around with a Nord lead2x yesterday and particularly the arpeggiator section and I wondered if there was an application/or even hardware that would allow me to arpeggiate other sources such as plug-in synths, samplers, even other outboard synths etc in a similar way. I use Protools 7.3.1 which I has pretty primitive MIDI capibilities. Any helpful replies would be appreciated.

Thread Starter | a little more info
basically i want an app that sits between the midi in protools and any other sound source (be it plug-in NI's, Reason, Kontakt, IK Multimedia stuff whatever or even outboard analog synths) i want to play a chord progression (record the midi to protools) and then have an app to arpeggiate these chords. I want to be able to control the amount of octaves of the arp, have the arp synched to the tempo of my protools session and also be able to use it out of sync and control its tempo, and also be able to select the way the arp is played (ie up, down, up down random etc etc). i think remidi does that. its a free demo download. im looking at it right now. u can assign digi 002 midi port as the source (which is what its coming in from your midi controller ) and you assign anywhere including protools and anything in that shows up midi on your audio-midi setup/ |

The Nordlead2 transmits MIDI note data from it's onboard apreggiator. Just plug your Nord's MIDI out to the MIDI IN of another synth/sampler/softsynth and make sure to set your Nordlead2's apreggiator to send MIDI in it's Shift Functions menu. You can now use the patterns on your Nordlead2 to apreggiate anything with a MIDI in. Using Protool's MIDI clock you can transmit MIDI TIME CLOCK or BEAT CLOCK OUT to the Nordlead2's MIDI IN as a clock source for your arpeggiation. Any workstation such as a Korg TRION, O1W, or Yamaha MOTIF continually transmit MIDI CLOCK from the onboard sequencer at whatever the BPM is set to. You could also try the Oberheim Cyclone MIDI Arpeggiator. In fact I think there is one on eBay now. Dang, I should try that sometime...

in the hw world, emu products (audacity 2k etc) have pretty decent arp capabilities.

My favourite thing for arpeggios (especially trance melodic arpeggios) was always Novation Supernova. Also the Yamaha Motif has a lot of arpeggios.

Call me old fashioned and maybe this is a little to obvious but when I need an arpeggiated sequence in a track I just play it in manually in realtime - its just so simple. Slow the tempo down to half speed and play in the patern of notes you need. put the tempo back to normal and bingo- job done. Arpeggiators often don't complete the cycle of notes in a way that links the chords together in the best possible way ( unless its only repeating the root ) Arpeggiators are fun for leaving a sequence running so you can tweak the sound the way you want it but there really is no need for them if you take the time to playing in your own lines and sequences.
