While its not a scam Im personally a little dubious of such companies. I think like many aspects of the music business its down to a bit of luck whether someone on taxis mailing list needs your music for something specific at that very time. But who knows, you could very wel l be in the right place at the right time.

for electronic music thers a few ways:

1) make your own label
print your own 12", CDs
distribute free promos and wait for orders

you risk $$$, but its a safe way, you really must trust in your self or your product or really fool your self to beleive its better than it is.
but reality hits hard in the end

for example: thers verry famouse $$$ songs, that was not the artist favorite, and/or was included by mistake in the album!!!

what you feel its usually different of what others feel or
you may like it more becouse you made an effort and you feel proud but that does not mean its better than othes, or that others will feel that too!

2) make your own virtual digital label
make your own web page with paypal, demo download/stream, etc..
add yahoo and google links

and give free promos to Big Djs
if they hear it,
if they like it,
if they play it on a regular basis, or a few times in big events

other Djs will start to wonder the name of that song and how to get it and play it

if all that happens also will receive calls from big labels for ....

you risk way less $$$ but... your song can be "stealed" by any of those Big Name Djs or by its employees, it has happenned before, and will happen again

power corrupts, easy money corrupts, fame corrupts
etc...

ive seen it a few times with friends, it has happenned to me also a few times

i always think "they steal the song but not my brain/creativity"
but thats fooling your self, its all about money

but in the end... no body wins -elton john

3) send demos to your favorite big labels
and wait...
for a +300 waiting line = like 6 months to be heard
if they like it, and dont steal it
will call you

also you could be jumped or stealed/ripped by any middle mans

also not the fastest method...
and they usually hear the first 30 seconds. only

4) beatport does not accepts new labels right now!
but there are others like it,
and thers lots of competitors
hard to be heard !

make shure you have verry attractive graphics

most people think "if it looks good.."

1+2 or all at same time

Not a scam, but three hundred dollars is quite steep if you are the next beatles? They should pay you.....

Anything that costs money to quote "Make you famous" is a scam, as legal as Taxi is, you are essentially paying them to listen to your music. You can do that here, on myspace, on several other sites for free... This is the best way to get your music out there... Get big enough and the A&R's will come to you... Movies will request your songs, Commercials will beg you to use your track (ingrid Michaelson as examples)

But whatever you do, do not spend 1 penny on getting someone to hear your music...
Give me a dollar I use to work for a major label? Ill listen to it.... I can do about the same for you as they can, which is not much... Record labels sign one band per quarter if they are lucky... So save your cash... Buy more gear and spend more time promoting yourself online
Best wishes,
D.Drake

the point of taxi is, that they are make money by getting money from the artists.
they do not make the money buy selling the music of the artists.

that is where my interest in taxi diminished.

big labels aren't going to steal your demos and just release them. hahaha.

they send you a contract and then screw you.

you'll be well aware when it happens

Contracts take to long... they send you a "Letter or Memo of Intent to sign you" then you sign it... then they screw you

smaller lables don't provide your selling stats or if they do, after allowed expenses (mastering, ads..) and the label share the artist will rarely see a dime. It's not that the label wants to srew you and they're not (well maybe some). what edm producers need to understand is that there's over -/+4,000 tracks released weekly, it's really hard to stay with your head above water, never mind selling enough to make a killing. work hard, play hard, and "be a bitch, if you wanna get rich."

big labels show the demos to other trusted people
to a lot of people before making a decition about calling you
jajajajajja

yes, i forgot 1 have one of those, with Emi
you get in that time $1 us.dll aprox. for each CD sold, if all the songs in the CD are yours!
the label pays to the CD making facility 1/3 of the selling price to the distributor
the distributors get 100% of the record company seling price = 1/3 of the store price, the stores get near 1/3 or 1/4 also of the final price

[top] you get less that others

also
if you dont sell over 500 units/copys you get nothing,
depends on the contract

if you get payd... you get payd like every 3/4/6 months and the people in charge of making the numbers & cheques are eager to steal you !!!
they pray you forget or lazy to go there and ask thent to show the books, numbers, etc..
they are too busy...

you are being F*cked
if you are not a Big name/player, they wont move a finger to pay you

also,
if you are a new artist, you probably wont get a free copy.
= you must go and buy your own music in a store ("that happened to me")
if the contract doesnt say... you wont get free promos of your own music

& you are bounded exclusive to them for a few years!
& they must aprove you, each time you take a dump!

like they own your body & soul for a few years !!!
jajajaja

if you enjoy being owned & F*ucked by males, go for it thumbsup
if not... you will feel relief when the contract ends
and your a.s.s will smoke

1) better to make your "Label" with nice prof. printed promo LPs & CDs not CD-r,
go to conferences, listen blablabla, shake hands, take pictures with players and give them your sealed pro. promos in WMC miami each/next year
"Not for Resale"

thats what most Big labels do anyways!

be ready to s.u.c.k!

Things like Taxi, or songwriting contests which promise publishing deals for the winners, mark you out as an amateur. Professionals are too busy trying to make money to bother with such things. As noted, Taxi makes money by taking your money, whether you're talented or not. If you are talented, people should be paying you. Don't start your career on the wrong foot.

continuing the "taxi music" conversation.......

so...the bottom line is that promoting your own stuff on the internet is the way to go ,then they will come to you ,of course, assuming you have a "good" product.....
...and speaking of myspace....is it that for real?i mean great for music??what`s the advantage of having an account there or making your own website??same trafic, etc??

i know grammy winners and jlsc contest winners
it does makes some people envy..
and your myspace hit/visit count will grow 316.602 like in a day
but...

John Lennon Songwriting Contest

...if you dont have goodlooks + a powerfull energy inside you
from true love or from Heroin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
or both
wont get far...
50% of songs are drug related, according to yahoo.com news

How about Pump Audio? Anyone using them? I've been seriously considering them for the past few months, but haven't signed up.

Its free, non-exclusive, you retain ownership of the material, they split licensing profits 50/50 and you get the performance royalties.

Sounds almost too good to be true.

I'll have to admit my label is quite nice to me. They're a subsidary of Warner Bros. called Milan Records, good honest peoples actually.

They have covered expenses on things when they really didn't have to., like fliers for shows and CD's to sell at shows. I'll have to recoup it but at least they don't send me an invoice!!

I still haven't recouped all my costs yet but I'm gettin' close!
