I don't do a ton of vocals, but when I do, I have an API 7600 channel strip that I use. I use it on keyboards too though.

Bus compressor- I like chaining a Red 3 and a DCL200 but I wouldn't throw myself off a cliff if I had a API 2500 or SSL G Series.

who wants grainy vocals ?
who wants dark or blur vocals ?

[top] personal taste

me ?
i like: more real 3d vocals than reality, larger than life, glowing life crystal clear + gold warmth trasnparency

lots of people/djs in 3rd world countrys have
or an m-audio/emu/mbox/digi001/2 mic-pre + plugs
or a yamaha promix01/01v/01v96/ds2416/03d/02r
or roland vs or behringer digital console
or a sound-blaster + dmp3 or samson or behringer

some djs have a focusrite platinum or a dbx platinum 5xx or an ART Vactrol
or presonus acp80/88, eureka, bluetube, bellari, dbx, alesis 3630 also, drawmer 1968, avalon, manley

i was a hardware hard-way
personally im quite happy with my 2x tfprousa.com(TM) "red" included in my emu 1820m + Lynx AES16

verry

to line-in, up to 16k or so, way better than 001/art mp/002r

my ex-BlueTubes were clean up to 50% gain, sounded similar to john hardy m-1, but dont overloads nice

i had a few rsp 360 with hush & rocktron 360 with hush comp/limiter that had a verry bold warm sound but... dark, highs a bit blur & automatic A-R but.. with a nice peak-limiter "eraser" stronger than dbx PeakStop

dont like dbx 266xl comp/limitr sound "harmonics" but love the 266xl gate
i also like the noisy ART Vactrol similar to ART TubeMP

people say m-audio tampa compressor are the bomb, but never heard one so far

but...
if im gonna record a worldclass vocal/ac.guitar ?

mic+cable+mic-pre+AD+wordclock somewhat is

adk mics or mxl vXX
vovox mic cable
+
focusrite liquid 4pre/channel
savillero Halios console mic-pre replica
or the real console

or
Roland vs2480 / mmp-2 + Lynx AES16 SynchroLock(TM)

or
john hardy m-1 + aurora8 or mytek or lavry or ua2192
or
millenia hv-3 + aurora8 or mytek or lavry or ua2192

+
ssl duende
or
liquid mix
or
gco-1
or
antress vdme-160
or
Urs channel strip Pro
or
soundburst protocomp
or
sonictimeworks compressor-x
or
mcdsp.com
or
Waves rcomp

havent heard sonnox, euphonix

anyway...
i miss the 2x symetrix 421, similar to aphex 320a, was so kool with synths
had that invisible magic, but a bit noisy
