Is the Jupiter 6 one of the most under-rated synths??

I have to say I've heard a lot of the old "classic" analogues, and the Jupiter 6 would sit at the top of my list as far as poly synths go.
I've owned all the main curtis synths - OBXa, MKS 80, Prophet 5 & Memory Moog, but the only one I've held on to is the Jupiter.
It has a lovely dark character about her, and is ultra programable.
The best bit is the sounds that come out of it seem to sit in a mix like nothing else.. Has anyone else noticed this? Try whacking in some memory moog chords and you'll be chopping away at them with an EQ till there is nothing left. Not the Jup though...

I haven't done the europa thing yet, but will do in the coming weeks..
Also, I'm yet to hear a Jupiter 8, but can imagine how sweet they would be!

I find the JP8 overpriced and the JP6 underpriced relatively... JP6 can do fabulous strings and it certainly avoids the bombastic sounds that can clutter mixes.
Still, apart from the 5 voice bit, I still prefer a Prophet 5. More organic sounding to my ears.

I like thet sound BUT generally its not underatd ..1000 EURO is fair price for this one...

JP8 is OVERRATED..... ant Im watching small JP4 s on market they will reach 1000 Euro soon ( thanx God I got 2)

I've got a Europa-modded JP-6 (just had the mod done a couple of months ago - breaths new life into an already wonderful synth) and you'd have to pry it from my cold, dead hands to get it from me. I've gotten an incredible amount of usage out of it. It's an extremely versatile and great fun to program.

I liked the prophet 5, but I ave to sqay it was a little on the bright side IMO. Having something that sits well in a mix is very important in my books.
My voyager as much as I love it doesnt always do that. It is possible for things to be too phat...

an old mate has a JP8 & i've got a JP6. the 6 has the midi. most people tend to agree the 8 is a bit "phatter" in the traditional sence. the 6 is great for more midrangey detuned noise patterns/arpeggiations. both are great analog boards.

according to wiki:
Quote:
The Jupiter-6 was released 2 years after the JP-8 and was an attempt at more affordable version of Roland's flagship. It features a similar voice architecture and appearance. It stored fewer patches, and had six voices. In order to make it cheaper to manufacture, a move towards integrated circuits (Curtis) was made, to replace discrete circuits used in JP-8's oscillators and amplifiers. JP-6 is built using CEM3340 chip for its oscillators, and CEM3360 for its voltage controlled amplifiers. These changes imparted a change in sonic character. additionally, Jupiter-6 features a true multimode resonant filter, built-in MIDI, unison detune function and ability to make multiple selection of waveforms on its oscillators.

jupiter 6 is a very cool synth, though I find it a bit brash at times.... kinda trancey sounding, or something. I can see why people would like it for electro house.

To me, the JP-4 is way more underrated. I think the jupiter 4 has better sounding oscs (massive sounding, they're pre CEM discrete oscs - I can't get over how awesome the early roland pre-CEM synths sound) and great filters, but is stopped from taking up too much space in a mix by only having one osc per voice, and only 4 voices....

Funny I think I pm'ed you Jonny a while back about lovin on the JP6. I've just had mine europa mod'ed over the summer and it's been one of the best things I've done all year. It really opened up a whole new world of possibilities for the synth and a whole new learning curve as well. I find the supermodes hard to remember and constantly have to refer to the manual but it's worth it! As far as the sound of it sitting well in a mix I'd have to agree. I always record with my JP6 even though I use a Juno 60 live (too freaked out to bring it out for a show). It just has a really nice sound that works well with alot of different styles of music. You can make it sound trancy but I would never say that's all it can do. I've never been let down when trying to program a nice lead, pad, or arpeggiated sequence with this synth. One thing I would'nt rely on it for is fat bass sounds but that's not to say it does'nt have some decent low end to it, I just have other options available that I prefer for those duties. It's been coming out of obscurity more and more. The last one on evil bay went for close to 2g's. I got mine for a grand and I thought that was expensive. The days of good deals on these vintage beauties are quickly comin to a close...

I don't think the jupiter six is underrated, I think most people know its a great board. As far as the Jupiter 8, its far from overrated. Most people make comments on it that haven't ever used one, usually taken back at the fact you need to have about 3K to get one now, if you can find it. Every synth from that time has a signature sound, so to me its not a question of what is better, moog etc etc, just what you are looking for. I have midi on my jupiter 8 and I have to say that it can sound really stupid at times, but when you get some chords and certain sounds working just right its fantastic, very detroit sounding, and the filters sound like they should. The jupiter 8 to me has a stronger attack then some boards, especially the MKS 80, its a lead, chord, pad monster. The market has determined that its a classic, there is a reason people are holding on to them and the price is rising.

I doubt it...
Both Jupiter 6 and "Sweet Dreams" came out the same year I believe (1983)
If I'm not mistaken the main synth on "Sweet Dreams" is JP4.
Not 100% sure though...

i don't think its under-rated...people talk about it a lot! i had one but i never really got into its sound so i passed it along. I agree with a previous poster - sounds a bit brash / in your face... the europa mod is well worth. it gives the JP6 an amazing arpeggiator. i think the prices on ebay are way over-priced.

Mayby we're all wrong? I searched the web and wikipedia says that eurythmics were using at least one OB1 and one Wasp at the time recording Sweet Dreams. Nowhere they mention the jp6, jp4 or the minimoog...

Sorry for the distraction!

It's awesome. Not overrated maybe underrated considering other options in the same price range. I have one with the Europa mod, it rocks! If you wanttrancy get a virus or softsynth like vanguard. Not trancy just RAW! So inspiring! Europa mod is a must, thank god for the guys at Synthcom they are synth geniuses and they beleive that Jup 6 is one of the best synths ever made thats wht they decided to do the upgrade, its a labor of love for them. The Jup 6 w/ Europa is really a modern synth with vintage character.

Also Synthcom says on their website that there will be future updates to Europa!

Which is monophonic. Listen to that synth line again and tell me if you really think it was played on a minimoog.

A Jupiter 6 without Europa is a classic analogue synth and an excellent instrument in its own right.

A Jupiter 6 with Europa is as good as any other 21st century analogue poly available
right now. It may not quite have the edge on features, such as a velocity sensitive
keyboard, but that arpeggiator and the MIDI control make it the peer of anything
else going at the moment.

Re: the MKS-80 Super Jupiter and the Jupiter 6. I have both. They do NOT sound the same. They may look similar on the inside, but the 80 has way more bottom and has a thicker sound. The JP6 has a more femine sound (sorry if that's not PC) to me. I love both and use them for different things. Both great synths.

Also, for the guy not wanting to use his JP6 live - I wouldn't worry about it. I toured and flew my jp6 all over the world in a anvil case. Then I stupidly gave it to a buddy without the case. He had it for several years before getting tired of it, bashed it around a bit and then ended up giving it back to me. THANK GOD for that!!!!!!!! So glad I got it back.

The 80 is killer on the road too. I've seen my anvil case fall out of planes, smash down luggage ramps, have roadies trash the case. Never missed a beat until all the internal circuit cards eventually came loose from their mountings and shorted out on each other. Pulling it apart and remounting all of them and....voila....good as new. Roland makes extremely reliable stuff.

I've had both since they were new and wouldn't give them up for anything.

One of these days I'll have to check out the Europa mod.
