Thread Starter | Moog Voyager vs SE-1X
Hello....Im shopping for a mono analog synth to complement my Virus Ti. I have been thinking about the Moog Voyager Rack or the SE-1X...I produce techno-house/progressive house. Also I was offered an Andromeda, but it seems to have mixed reviews. Unfortunately I have never played with the SE-1X since I have never seen one at local stores, I have an idea of what Moog sounds coz I have the minimonsta plug in...not the same but its a reference point. I really want FAT Analog Bass and Leads, I dont care about pads and other sounds.....Also it should be intuitive to use and fun. sugestions are very welcome |

Well I think they both would work for what you are looking to do, although due to current trends in house music, the moog may be something you would like more. In the end they are both high quality machines, you just need to buy one and use it, you can always sell it and then try the other. I usually just get synths and use them, then I know for sure.

I wouldn't outrule a Moog Little Phatty. Very intuitive and fun to use thumbsup

Also I dont have the space for another keyboard and I prefer lots of knobs to tweak. I;m watching ebay auctions...the Moog Voyager goes for us$1500 average with V3 installed...and the SE-1X about us$1000. So the difference is a lot.....does the Moog sound us$500 more than the SE-1X?

The phatty has a bunch of factory presets for the non tweaker types. but I'd go with a voyager anyways. |

| Well I think you could use both, but I think the electro house sounds, the moog is really being used like crazy, people are after those basses, and sounds. Every studio I see like Chris Lake, D. Ramirez, those types all have the Moog voyager. Its just popular at the moment.

I think a Voyager runs more than $1500. I got my Signature for $2200 and I thought it was a steal. If you can find one for that price, more power to you. While they are compatible with all CV things, moog also of course has a large line of CV pedals and additional gear (CP/VX) that will help a lot. You should go play with each at a store and see what you like. They both sound find, and if you can't make a decent house lead/bass on either of them, then you need a different job. I personally like/own the Moog.

Perhaps do a local search (or make a search macro that emails you) if an SE-1X comes up in NYC on eBay and then ask the person if you could come try it out. Ask on the Hip-Hop forum, because I know that many of them have SE-1X's.

| Lives for gear | Forget the SE-1X
Wow, I had looked at the SE-1X before, but had never paid attention to the back panel. No CV/Gate I/O? Forget that. Get the Moog.

Both are great, IMO SE-1X is better for bass, Voyager is better for everything else. In fact the SE-1 is the best bass-synth ever (at least my opinion). Reason for this is that while you change the the pulseform in the oscillators with a pot in the Voyager, SE-1 has tre pulseforms in each oscillator (saw, tri & square). These are controlled by switch-buttons for each, so you can have all three waveforms working at the same time. This produces a rock solid bottom.. For leads and everything else I like the characteristics of the Voyager better. And, the Little Phatty is great as well! BTW I've seen SE-1's around $600 on ebay every now and then..

I sold my Voyager a few months back, but missed it so much I just bought a RME on eBay the other day. The thing frikn rocks.. I'm yet to hear anything that can touch it for Bass, but I haven't heard the SE1x.. I'd like to get one of those as well in thye near future purely on all the glowing reports I constantly hear. |

| Yeah the originals are classic, but until the reissues came out, they were not as available to everyone. The little phatty and RME, really put it in a price range that most everyone can get now. Anyway, they are being used a lot and sound great.

I have owned a Mini Moog Model D since 1971 and am very capable of creating a timbre I want on it. I refuse to take it out for stage use so I picked up a Little Phatty. It is very close in sound, slightly more involved to set up in real time but does allow for user presets to be stored. I just pick a preset and change the sound to suit my needs then store it. For a live gig this is a very significant advantage over the Mini and is way cool for a 1 hour set that seques from one tune to the next. I've only had it a few months but can now tweak it live like I used to do with the Mini if I really get inspired. ![]() IMHO, the Little Phatty delivers a great mono analog sound for $1,000. new

Just to update my original post, I have bought a Moog Voyager RME, so far Im very pleased with it.....and this thing looks so damn cool. it was tough choice between the SE-1X and the Moog, but then I realized I had the money to go for the real thing and I should get it...besides the design of the Voyager RME suits me better as a desktop synth. |

| Good choice (the other choice would also have been good). I also ordered a Voyager last week. But I also like the sound of the SE-1. |

This really shouldn't be a 'VS' thread. Both are great synths with their own unique character. Owning both would cover alot of territory.

Thread Starter | you might be right, but my VS in the post refered more to a "OR" in a way. Im happy with my choice, I Also believe the Moog would retain its resale value more than the SE-1 .
