Questions About Compression In House Music

1. If my BPM is 136 then time from kick to next kick is 441ms. How long take all compression cycle? For example attack 41ms + release 400ms(sum 441ms)?

2. How compressor knows when start count ms?

compression cycle???? are you writing house music or are you writing an internal combustion engine?

the compressor detects when the incoming signal is above the "threshold" you have set on the compressor. At this point it starts to bring in it's gain reduction, based on the "Attack" time you set.

When the incoming signal goes back below the "threshold" level, then the compressor starts taking out its gain reduction, based on your "Release" setting.

so to get compressor attack and release time suitable for your music, play with the attack and release controls (and threshold, and ratio!) and listen to how it sounds. The rate of attack and release really depends on a lot of what's in the music.

Agreed - For delays, maybe a bit of math (or a delay chart/calculation/converter BPM to ms., etc.), but for compression?? No. There is no magic formula. Just tweak the controls tayloring them to how you want the end result to sound.

If you are looking for "pumping" compression, do a search in this forum for "sidechain compression" and you will get all the info you need. There is a lot of information here that goes into great detail as to how to achieve what you are after. You will have to read, listen and learn to do it yourself.

Sidechain compression requires that you have the individual tracks from your song separated. It cannot be done from just a single stereo file as the one you posted.

i'm not sure if english is your first language but there is a compression tutorial here:

SSL

there are files to download if you want -

it is from SSL so they talk alot about the duende... but the principles are true for most
compressors that have those parameters available.

try some of the ideas on your own compressor, and then modify it for your track.

hahaha.. made me laugh.. ;-)

to the thread starter.. I know compression can be a bitch to learn.. But I think the best way to use compression is a combination of watching the gain reduction, balancing the output gain and as others stated in this thread: USING YOUR EARS.

Depending on the material, you would want a particular set of settings.. For the next track, those settings might not produce a good sound.. So its always up and around, changing things until it SOUNDS GOOD..

My friend, I have a simple solution for you. And it's free.

KVR: SoundFonts.it KTrancer - Virtual Effect

Insert this plugin into your track, assign a MIDI channel to the plugin, and play the pumping pattern you want on your keyboard. This is the easy way to get the effect I think you are trying to get.

I just want to back up those that say to just use your ears... Tweak until you hear the result you are looking for... I used to fall into the trap of trying to understand how, why etc...when I could have been laying out a tune, or hands on practice with a compressor or eq, etc...this is the BEST way to learn and understand
