ARP Odyssey 2813

Hi!

I have the opportunity to buy an ARP Odyssey 2813.
Does anybody have the same model Odyssey?
Is the Mark II 2813 a good way to go, or should I try to find
a Mark III black/orange model?

What should I check before I buy?

Analogue synth heads - please advise (Mr. Morley, I know you know
your ARPs...respect!)

Thank you!

Hi,

All three models of the Arp Odssey have different sounding filters so thats more down to personal taste. I have a mod'ed MK3 with midi etc. The main thing you need to check is the sliders as they do start to get flaky if dirty so thats the biggest issue I'd say - there is a company making complete replacement slider sets for the Oddys.

You need to check it out I'd Say

Beer.

Arp Ody Filter

Thanks for your reply!

As far as I know the Odyssey Mark II and Odyssey Mark III have the same filter,
the 4075, except for the few units that were "mysteriously" shipped with the Moog
filter design copy, the 4035.

2810-2811-2812-2813-2815 model 2
have boards inside # A-II,B-II, C-II & PWR SUP-II
Some Odyssey-2 models employ the older style B-1 board
pitch change by a knob.
black faced with gold lettering.
many upgraded or modifed to have the PPC,
using mod kit 6800301 from ARP. & some later units had PPC from factory.
new style power switch.
Wrap around vinyl bottom cover
used 24 DB/octave filter (4035 or 4075)
Improved S/H memory circuit design.
better power supply.

2820-2823 model 3 (1978)
have boards inside # A-II,B-II, C-II & PWR SUP-II
Black with orange face plate.
steel chassis with leather end blocks.
PPC for pitch bend & modulation.
used 24 DB/octave filter (4075)

Is this info incorrect?

I like the 1st rev and the 3rd rev. I'm not the hugest fan of rev2, but it could be that I think it's ugly.

That's probably useless since they are most likely pretty much the same synth. The confusing thing about the Odysseys are the filters. All whiteface Odysseys have the 12dB/oct 4023 filter. All black/orange Odysseys have the 24dB/oct 4075 filter. The black/gold Odysseys however, might have the 4023, the 4075 or the 4035 24dB/oct filter. Most of them have the 4075 filter though.

The filters do sound very different, but it's all a matter of taste. My favorite is the 4023. Other than that they are all very similar. All Odysseys are great. Great sound and a lot of features. My major complaint is the build quality. It's just medium.

Make sure all sliders and keys work as expected, and of course that the oscillators stay in tune. The sliders probably won't be very smooth if they weren't restored. I've fixed three Odysseys with drifting keyboard CV, but if that's the problem you'll notice it right away.

Thanks for all the info, Amino!

Since the Odyssey I'm looking at has the 3 PPC rubber pads I would assume
that it is a late MK II and has the 4075 filter....

I have the same problem with the built quality but can't think of an alternative
besides a Pro1, and they're only of medium built quality, too.

Any other analogue mono synth suggestions superior to the Odyssey and Pro1?
And I don't want a Mini Moog....

I would love to find a Yamaha CS series, preferably a CS-60 (I know, it's a poly)
or CS40m, but I do have some funds right now, am in need of a nice vintage
analogue board and I'm having a hard time waiting for a clean CS to come around
again...

I also posted in WTB for a CS-60, so if any Gearslut in the U.S. would like to sell his
or her CS-60, please let me know....

Cheers!

1. Octave Cat (not superior, really, but another option)

2. Oberheim 2-voice (superior in some ways, not as good in others)

3. Dave Smith monosynth

4. Cwejman

5. Studio Electronics

6. Lots of really obscure stuff like Syntons and Gleemans, you're probably not likely to find one, but worth mentioning in case you stumble upon one.

I adore odysseys...mine is a MK II but has a second filter fitted (factory mod) but to be honest I think they all sound great. People go on about moog filters in earlier ones but this never impressed me. I like them all for what they are. I have more experience with 2600's and the one I have ended up with is a black & orange which I prefer to any of the earlier ones I had. It's also totally reliable.
Main thing is the odyssey is feature packed, sounds great (no matter which version) and good value these days.
Enjoy!
