I use to be able to get a cool beat happening ten years ago in seconds now I have to try and get the timing right in the SX editor....should I get an external midi i/o?....

maybe its just my set up is missing that...i do intend to get an Andromeda A6 and CODE in the future, but obviously want to get some tight beats first

Hope you sort your problem, lately I have felt that I am spending more time troubleshooting than actually making/recording music.

As the original poster says, some people manage to get the timing right.

What are they doing right - or what are you doing wrong?

ive learnt to work around midi timing a bit

I split everything into 1 part per midi port , multiple midi interfaces on separate usb buses , often midi parts are broken down into 1 sound per midi port , ie kick and snare will be 2 different pieces of hardware ,

the midi stream for everything is stripped bare , no unnecessary cc data , sysex or timecode or anything that could mess up a timing sensitive track .

percussion tracks that are very timing sensitive will be recorded individually as audio from midi or will come straight from software / audio tracks.

Cubase: 32-bit Windows XP SP3, and Midex 3/8. Logic: Any Mac OS, Unitor/AMT 8. Digital Performer: MIDI Express 128. ....Otherwise, forget DAW's for MIDI, indeed.

I'd like to see proof of how far off Battery 3 is....I have a couple songs out that I just used battery for drums....and never bounced to audio......i just make the song....and bounce the final mix.....I never even noticed it was off ....how much latency you think there is from battery in logic?

There shouldn't be any. The issue with MIDI timing is in regards to hardware instruments. Plugins are supposed to be sample-accurate.

I'm not going to disagree with you. I am simply going to suggest that in your future posts, rather than stating your experiences as fact (as much as you feel that they are), say something along the lines of 'I have had absolutely nothing but bad experiences in using modern DAW software for MIDI and prefer and recommend using older MIDI systems that do not have the overhead of handling audio and more complicated operating systems.'

I ask this of you only because thousands of people use modern DAWs and MIDI and do not feel that they suck.
