tascam 1884 - cannot use for pci audio interface w/ pro tools

Is it true that when you use pro tools with the tascam 1884 that it will not act as the firewire audio interface but it will with a lot of the other programs (i.e. sonar cakewalk, reason 3.0, etc.)? I was told this by tascam support. They said a seperate pci audio interface would have to be used. They even offered the information that m-audio project mix will work as a firewire interface with pro-tools (which is true because m-powered pro tools is made especially for the project mix control surface).

Someone please help. I need to know because I need to purchase one or the other soon. I would like to know what is best for me (which will be most likely determined by what is above).

thanks to everyone who replies

It will only act as a control surface.

How do you like the board overall (functions, user-friendliness, quality of sound, etc.)? What are some pros and cons from your point of view?
Are you familiar with m-audio project mix and how the two compare?

for me it's a bit of a love/hate relationship.... it does most of what they say it will... ie: not all functions are supported in any particular app... but it sounds great and the pre's while not stellar are very usable as are the convertors... if you get this ya might want to check the tascam users group... there's a post about blowing pre's and ser# pre/post fix... dont be alarmed.. it's just some people have blown pre's by plugging/unplugging condesor mics with the phantom still on... the fix was pretty easy...
