i have a dream

for so long i have dreamed to have 4x pairs of ElectroVoice Xi-1082
Xi-1082 - Electrovoice

(or the plastic Zx1 ) ZX1 - Electrovoice

in a small home array, but modified to by-pass the internal x-over and using an active digital/analog crossover and bi-amplfied with alesis ra300/ra500
those EV DH3 / DH2005 drivers sound sweet

ok, crazy you might think but... old tannoy dual 12" - not new ok, but they have a very loud clear sound defined mids, not that sort of muffly tight modern speaker sound... The tannoys are quite close to what a pa will pump out but controlled and reasonably accurate, and you can make them LOUD!!!

ev quality's dropped in recent times btw, not what they used to be

I usually recommend people to have 2 sets - the flat, accurate, honest set and the more 'hi fi' sounding set for one key reason - when you are working on an electronic music track you need to be 'vibing' off the track to get inspiration and get into it - so you need nice full low end for the bass & the kick. Then when you are ready to mixdown, move to the accurate, flat speakers to get the mix right.

I use Event ASP8's which are almost good enough to be both the flat pair and the hi-fi pair for me as they are just slightly on the hi-fi side of flat (if that makes sense). But I also have an old set of KRK Rokits which are flat as a pancake if i need them. However, when I just had the KRK speakers, I worked mainly in headphones as I couldnt get ANY vibe from them whilst tweaking around, trying to get a groove going.

I read a lot of negative press/forum comments around the place regarding Mackie HR824 which I think misses the point when it comes to dance music. I heard these in action at a friend's house and whilst they are a little 'hi-fi', they are SO sweet sounding that you can really vibe off them. If you dont have a flatter pair to use as well as the HR824, its just a matter of working out how to compensate for their rich low end in the mix IMO

ps - HI Musgroove!

yes, quite a bit. i also remember seeing a pic of one of the big 90's dance outfits with a pair, orbital or someone like that

hard to describe the sound, you just have to hear them.

or...

thinking more about it,

minium 4x pairs of jbl control 23 mini array + rmx850 with noisy fan! at 50% gain,
50w 8ohms each = 200w 2ohms per side, or two alesis ra300 amps at 100w 4ohms per side

+
4x/8x any single same amplified subwoofer brand
emu ps12 or event or krk rp10 , etc...
or...
build your own subwoofer, its easy and fun !
with eminence designer and use a qsc rmx850 or 1450 in other room or alesis ra500 fanless + any analog or digital active crossover even a used old dbx120xp has a -6dB at 80Hz or 120hz that works!
nice place to start with : US SPEAKER PARTS - Speakers, Speaker Cabinets, Guitar speakers, Bass speakers, , Woofers, HF Drivers, speaker upgrades and replacement speakers. Eminence Speaker, JBL speakers, 18 Sound, B&C, EV, Tannoy, Peavey, Celestion, RCF, Jensen, Beyma, Fane, P

i do recomend woofers/speakers that thielle & small parameters need big boxes and have decent long xmax

but 12 inches for a room will move faster than a 18inch and thats more accurate lows,
ev evm10dlx its a verry balanced woofer 4.1mm xmax, choose carfully by design
Eminence - The Art and Science of Sound
or use a 24inch precision devices! jajajajaja
or 21inch bayma!

build a box with minium 2 pairs jajajaj
but in face to face isobaric configuration !
separated only each pair by a 1inch ring of MDF,
like this: but symetic and not 8 woofers, becouse its harder to move
Quad-Isobaric

the outside woofers with inversed polarity, so inside woofers push and the outside woofers pulls with same signal, dont forget the mdf ring! its safer

isobaric = to reduce the box size at half and distortion levels,
cone will be twice strong but same lightweight = strong & faster

long tube ports with any vacum cleaner machine/aspirator flexible tubes

looks like frankestein but sounds like a quake concert, i like to place them looking upward, depends on the room placement

i dont like the crest audio ca sound
cant remember the crown sound vs. qsc rmx

4x pairs of jbl control 23 its like having a pair of 14inch cones and 2inch tweeters but becouse they are smaller and lightweght they move faster than the real 14inch + 2inch = more accurate
but will need lots of subwoofers
or 4x pairs of QSC AD-S32T 3" + 0.75" tweeter 30w each. = 12" + 3"
or 4x pairs of jbL lsr6325p 150w each. ? its like having a pair of 21inch cones + 6inch tweeters.
or 4x pairs of event asp6 280w each. ? its like having a pair of 26inch cones + 4inch tweeters.
or 4x pairs of yamaha mps3 or mps5 ?
or 4x genelec 8020apm 4" + 3/4" 20w each = 16" + 3"
or 4x genelec 8030ap 5" + 3/4" 40w each = 20" + 3"
or 4x genelec 8040a 6.5" + 3/4" 90w each = 26" + 3"
or 4x genelec 8050a 8" + 1" 150w each = 32" + 4" tweeter

it may seem over kill at first, but bigger the total cone surface area but smaller and lightweight the drivers and cones,
vs. louder the dB SPL
it will move more air molecules easyer! than just a pair of 5inch cone area at 4 times louder

will need less dB SPL to move 4 times more air molecules! = accurate and better for the ears!
you will hear your speakers not your room!
similar to BIG LOUD CONERT / CLUB Sound!
you will hear details like headphones but Bigger!

the only thing to think about is that the tweeters need to have some kind of horn loaded or wave guide to control the dispersion of the highs, so it does not bumps with the next speaker highs if usign 1 colums of 2 rows, its better 1 colum per side with 1 row but vertically longer becouse the tweeter dispersion pattern

there are others , jbl contro 30, or electrovoice zx1 ,etc..

JBL SVA 2100 with a good tube amp or really nice class A solid state. Make sure you have the room for them though and avoid the SVA 1800s and lower.

I took mine apart and rebuilt the Xovers and many a audiophile speaker has come and gone at more than three times the price and been left in shame. Manufacturers hate when that happens.

But either way they are full range fast in bass and most important very well balanced in their FR ranges.
