Daft Punk Style Filter Bass

There's a particular sound I really want to nail but can't quite get it right..
A really good example is on Voyager by Daft Punk.
It's also on their remix of Mothership Reconnection and quite a few other tracks.
Here's a link..

http://www.juno.co.uk/search/?q=daft...all&column=all

Listen to...
Scott Grooves - "Mothership Reconnection" (Daft Punk remix)

I know theres obviously a lot ducking/side chaining to get that pumping sound, but the actual bass sound is the killer. Is it a synth like a 106 or is it actually a real bass....?
Thoughts people?

My Guess

That is a killer bassline indeed. Sounds really nice.

My Guess is that its a synth bass with a bit of a cool filter, with a touch resonance.

In the "vst" world Id probably use Fabfilter twin for the synth with Tone2 Filter bank for the filter.

And roll through the bass presets.

I also think the sick melody or pattern being played heps it sound cooler.

Hope that helps

Yeah I think I just need to flick through presets running through a good filter.. I know they use a mutator.
I have a few patterns similar to that which is why I'm after that sound.
The french have just nailed it. Also check out fred falkes remix of Hot Chip - Colours if you can find it.

Hi mate, I started a thread on this exact same topic some time ago. I'll fish it out & shoot it over to you.

To cut a long story short, the Scott Grooves bass sound comes from a Korg MS20. If you listen carefully it has all the very distinct MS 20 filter characteristics

If you can’t get hold of a real one, the Korg Legacy collection does a great job of it. DP are also big on the Mutator remember....

You cant go wrong with an MS 20....

Cheers

You're a champ! Dont have an MS-20 but I have the Legacy collection and a moog voyager - so I should be able to get close to it. Gonna track down a mutator as well.

The Legacy Collection is the MS20. It does a damn fine job of emulating the orginal.

Well it depends how you look at it. No it doesn’t have the EXACT characteristics of the original, but it’s so close! I had a real one & sold it
when I got the legacy collection.

The problem with the real ones is once they get on & the temperature in the room changes, so does the patch your working on! A common problem with real analog synths now days.

It’s the Filter that gives it its signature sound. Depending on your Audio interface, you could grab a frostwave Resonator & send the OSC signal from the Legacy Collection in to it. DP Were also huge on the Mutator, but you have to get these from Mutronics direct these days (I thinks) Check out: http://www.frostwave.com/blueringerv2/index.html

It’s a great sounding MS20 filter emulation. VERY close!!!!

Cheers

It does sound as if it has a bit of the tube distortion (a la thermionic culture vulture) on top.

I've actually found out, that the sound these guys use, along with a lot of other french cats, is the main bass patch on the Yamaha DX-100 through a mutator!!

It's a really thick, slightly organic sound, which is also used by chromeo as the modulator in their talk-box, because it's so rich in harmonics.
Roger Troutman of Zapp was the original person to exploit that sound though..

This synth can be had for a few hundred dollars, but the Mutator is a differen story..

Arrow uhmm yamaha dx fm sound

well the yamaha dx7/dx1 "the famous/the big one"
actually its 12-Bit 6-operators

the DX7 II "mk2" its 16-bit 6-operators

the DX100 its 4-operators

Vintage Synth Explorer

the dx200 / plg150-dx are newer 24-bit

but still , natve instruments FM7 winns, becouse you can use a lynx l22 or rme hdsp9632, emu 1820m, or any other pro soundcard
http://audio.rightmark.org

comparison dx7 vs. dx7ii-fd (12-bit vs. 16-bit)
YAMAHA DX7 / DX7II: Sound Comparison

if you want the 12-bit sound, any decimator plugin will do the trick,
korg mde-x, basementarts. frantic filters, waldorf d-pole, free mda plugins
etc...

That's a decent acoustic bass imitiation, almost as good as a real guitar. It might sound better to some because a lot of the bass sounds in today's music are weak compared to the 70s and 80s. A real guitar still sounds better, as do vintage analog bass sounds.

Troutman popularized the talk box but was far from the first to use it.

i am gutted by this, especially robot rock!! i thought that the synth lines and basslines in that track were so so cool!! Bit dissapointed that not one bit was original! Mind you, i am now a big fan of " Breakwater"!

That sounds like the bass sound at the beginning of the mothership reconnection mix. I'd like to know how to get that cool bass sound when the dance rhythm comes in half way through (same as in voyager on discovery).

So did I but trust me it is.. I bought one a few days ago. It also has the patch used for the big harp sounding arpeggio on voyager.
I don't have a mutator, but I do have a Voyager, so I'll make a track with the patch and post it for you guys to hear ASAP. I'm a shit player but my production partner is dope, so I'll get him to play something.

I am also a huge Daft Punk fan, but to be honest, it`s not worth to imitate their sound just because you like them. Create your own. I give you this advice because I tried to do the same and got totally lost in production details for almost two years. I owned a Mutator filterbank, had the same samplers, drum machines etc. I can tell you one thing: You will never make a decent record if you always have to think if it sounds like DP! Be yourself and be creative. If it`s only the sound you`re after that`s ok, but don`t get obsessed with it, you will never have success otherwise. Daft Punk where/are one of a kind. I promise you, as soon as you see that and have faith in your own sound you will be succesful...
