electronic drums

i got a friend looking for an electronic drum set. he's got $600.
i know most the roland & pintech sets are in the $1500-$3000 range.
i had an old simmons kit back in the day but would like to get him into something more contemporary.

assuming his budget is inflexible & we cant find him a used kit in that range...
heres what i'm thinkin:

alesis DM5DP for toms
roland kd7 kick
pintech pad snare
cymbals pintech
used beater hardware
use my alesis d4 drum module as the brain.

the other route is mesh "silent" heads on a regular kit & throwing some triggers on it, if theyd stick.

anybody used the alesis pads?
any tips on getting triggers to stick to mesh drum heads?
are theres used full kits i'm not finding for cheap?

Yeah, I think they opted out of hex-shaped, plexi coverd plywood in favor of round rubber pads....Man, I went thru so many pair of drumsticks playing those things !!

yeah i had the sds800 set with the kick & 3 pads. ended up passing it along to an analog junkie friend of mine. cant say i miss it. those things were so dead to hit, the new ones are much bouncier.
