However, it still takes up valuable space, needs to be maintained, cleaned and dusted.
The usual problem when setting up a studio is that there are too many pieces of gear that belong in the middle of the desk: the computer keyboard and mouse, the mixer, the MIDI keyboard, the pad controller, the DAW controller e.g. Mackie Control Universal, etc). One can buy a bigger desk, of course, but our arms are only so long. I find that the desk width should not exceed 120cm, otherwise it won't be easy to reach for your gear.
Things like the Mackie Control Universal make me laugh very hard, they literally take up your whole desk space, leaving no space for more important bits such as a MIDI keyboards, a computer keyboards etc. I also was lured by the hype into buying a Mackie Control Universal. Once I set it up it was so inconvenient having it in the middle of my desk that it ended up to one side and was hardly ever used. Eventually it went on eBay. The extra desk space it left behind was far more useful than the MCU itself ever was.
So, in summary, a lot of these "impressive" studios are no better than a lot of in-the-box studios yet they require much more effort to maintain and compromise ergonomics and, in turn, the quality of our work. | Are you responding to my setup? Because your only seeing a 3rd of it
here is another 3rd of it. As you can see I have a big mouse in the middle of my desk. Surprisingly, it paid for itself in about 2 months.
We all have different realities and many great things can be done with a stick and a empty coke can all the way up to the finest studios on the planet. What matters is the operator(s) regardless of how much money was spent.
You shouldn't discount completely the who what where when and whys of all of this.
And remember for some of us the more gear we buy the less we pay in taxes, we work faster and we get what we believe is a better sound.
I own probably $6000 in plug ins as well. It all works. |

You are aware that this is a website dedicated to people who love to collect (and sometimes play) musical equipment, right?

Here is a snap of my little set-up.
There's not too much to "Ooh and Aah" about, but it does keep me off the streets.
And here's a track that was recorded here a few months ago.

Since I recently got my first eurorack system I've rearranged one side of the room to become a little semi-modular/patch-friendly zone. |

I never really thought people would collect gear for the sake of it, until you mentioned it and I read this wiki on compulsive hoarding. Obviously a minimalistic set-up seems to work better for me, and I also like sarcasm.

I think of a few reasons but I think we all know what those are. No need to say them.

indeed.
i'm thinking of replacing my Orville ( 2 x DSP7500) with DSP7000 or 7500, and H3000 DSE.. to have two distinct Eventide characters. even tho it was a nice idea in theory, i got a few other nice pieces of reverb/fx outboard i regularly use, so i almost never need to fire up both engines in Orville.

Hi CfNorENa, yeah okay it is hard to disagree with that. Those two are my favourites.
clusterchord, you might be onto something there. I first bought the 3500 and fell in love with it. So I figured I would upgrade to the 7000 and sell the 3500. But then when I got the 7000, I found that it was a totally different beast to the 3500, and I couldn't part with it.
The 7000 has a higher quality sound, but it doesn't have the personality of the 3500.
If I HAD to choose between the two, I would probably keep the 3500. It is just wonderful.
Having both is really sweet though. |

Also interested, how do you manage to work with speakers of that size, without acoustic treatment of the room?

It doesn't matter too much anyway, I mix probably 90 percent on headphones, and just use the speakers for reference.
I've got a few sets of nice cans, and a dedicated valve headphone amp.
A bigger room would be nice though.

Obviously a minimalistic set-up seems to work better for me, and I also like sarcasm. | I'm sure there's an element of hording here. I suffer from it from time to time. I met a guy once who traded something he really loved to me for something he wasn't sure about. His motto? "Eh, It's only gear." Touche. I try to keep that in the back of the mind when making those decisions. One thing that's true is that people love the gear they have whether it deserves the love or not. It takes a long time to not only learn to be objective about gear, even longer to act objectively.
Personally I'm trying to live by a six month rule. Meaning if it's not touched in six months then it gets the boot. The only thing that slows that cycle is that I hate shipping stuff, and the eBay process takes so much time and energy. I've got half a room full of excellent vintage gear that's just waiting for me to get less lazy and let the hammer fall.
