Garageband Rules!

I have been house minding for the last week with only my G4 iBook and Tivoli Audio stereo.
I have pumped out a couple of songs using garage band and a few extra soft synths. Its so fast for getting ideas down! I'm going to mix it all down in Cubase when i get back home, but for song writing this free program is great!
Sorry, but i just had to share my enthusiasm...

I agree! Sometimes if you just want to capture an idea, it can be SUPER fast.
Excellent piece of software.

4 sure! I use GarageBand for demos for my composing clients all the time. One time a client said, "that sounds great, let's just use that!"

And no, I didn't tell him that it was done in GarageBand...

This is going to sound stupid, but Garageband confuses me sometimes as I'm used to Logic Pro. Yes, they are 'close', but I've also been confused about how to do something in Adobe Elements, as I'm used to Photoshop CS2.

Looking around for basic functions in garageband is ok, but then I'm trying to figure out something else and it confuses me so much. Guess I'll stay with Logic

GarageBand gets overlooked way too much.

I wish Logic was this easy to use.

In fact I'd really like to see GarageBand Pro or see Logic completely revamped to be more user friendly.

You are not alone. I love GB and can't stand Logic.

IMHO the interface in Garageband is beautifully simple and intuitive. I use GB to build demo recordings of songs I write. When I come up with songs that band wants to take farther I export out a few stems and bring them into Protools. After I get them into Protools I always wish Digi would support Apple loops.

The AU signal processing plugs included in GB are very good sounding.

Garageband is a killer deal considering it's only one of the iLife apps in a $79 software package that includes photo processing, video production, DVD creation and a web page building app. I like them all but I use Garageband all the time.

I wish there was a better way to export tracks out of Garageband but that's a very small complaint.

I agree with the poster above that came from logic and was confused by garageband.

When i got my macbook a few months back the first thing i did was fire up garage band (which i had never used before) and i had no clue what to do. After 10 minutes of fumbling around i just closed it and never used it again.

Now on the other hand, the day I got Logic 6 Platinum 4 years ago I had a huge tracking session THAT NIGHT and was able to jump right in no problem.

Different strokes...i guess. I'll try garageband again someday though.

Well i wouldn't say that Logic is THAT easy to use right off the bat. I spent a few hours yesterday just reconfiguring my enviroment to work/play well with a new audio interface and midi gear.

However, Logic can be dead easy to use if not easier than garageband if you're only using 2in/2out and one midi port.

It is true what people say about logic, amazing software, however I have not found a single soul who knows more than 50% of how to use logic. In my opinion it is too much, and they should simplify it. As to garageband, I have never tried it. However for a quick write down of an idea I reckon Image Line's Fruity 6 is quite nice...

I have a dumb question about GB...

How do I do overdubs on MIDI tracks?
Everythime I track let's say, kick and snare on a recording pass and I want to do hi-hat and cymbals on the second pass, if I hit record, it replaces the old recording...
Am I doing something wrong?
I use Pro Tools everyday, I'm very familiar to DP but I just can't find out how to do this on GB.
Thanks!

Like he said, yes, but you won't be able to automate any effect parameters.

Any audio unit instruments or fx you have, except for Logic's, are usable in Garageband.

Yep, Garageband rules! It's perfect for drunken jam sessions when any computer novice might be getting their hands on the controls. Some mates and I recorded an albums worth of "spontaneous" music in Garageband using only an SM57, a Kaoss Pad (EVERYTHING went through it) and a Tascam interface. Sounds great, if I do say so myself. I mixed it in Logic, as GB files are .lso compatible. Check it out! www.myspace.com/thereaintnosanityclause

heath.

Note: If you are easily offended in the biblical sense, perhaps don't listen to the song "Moses".
