My tom is a 14 but i had the same problem at first. I then realized that since it is mounted on a stand, the resonance is going to be a little different. I really have to tune it differently than the for toms and make it a bit more open to compensate for the "ringing" the mount takes out. Now i'm having problems with my 16"!! hahaha

I just got a new snake, a D112, extra SM57, and moved my Ludwig kit into another more isolated room. Good results so far, but I have no overheads, so i'm using an AT4060 for a room/mono overhead. However, I'm just waiting for UPS to deliver my Cascade Fatheads (standard transformers). So hopefully in a few days I'll have some nice clips to post. Well, I do have one actually. But I added some reverb/compression, so it's not a 'pure' example of the drums. It's nothing great musically, and i screw up on drums a few times (Hey i'm a guitarist, not a drummer!), but it shows the sounds of what I have so far. Nothing esoteric on the drums. Just logic plugins. Bass was DI'd into a Mackie 400F, and the guitar was Guitar Amp Pro in Logic. It was late night and my main amp is at a gig that i'm doing...

I have a quick question. I am finally getting around to setting up the drums this weekend and was wondering how everyone has the 13" rack tom set up? I know it comes with mounting hardware to attach it to a cymbal stand which is what I will probably do but I was curious. I have seen quite a few people put the tom on a snare stand and place it in the same place though. Any preferences? Thanks!

I have a 14" tom and I like to put it on a snare stand. For some reason I get better placement, but it really is what you feel comfortable with. Keep in mind that when it is mounted on a snare stand it doesn't not vibrate as much, so i suppose having it more free floating would produce a more natural sound. I mostly play live so I compromise for comfort.

Hmmm...I guess I will just have to experiment. I do like the idea of having more control over the placement by putting it on a snare stand. I also noticed that most kits like this seem to use a snare stand instead of mounting it to a cymbal stand.

I think the price may have gone up on these things. Anybody know if that's true? The lowest price I saw so far was $910 for the silver sparkle @ GC and $1025 for the naturals at another store. -Aaron

You guys should make friends with your local drum shop. I got mine for $575. Of course they don't carry them anymore now. |

In Europe they're not even as cheap as $1000 ... more like twice as much!!!! If anyone can find a set for me and ship it over here, I'll gladly spend $800 plus shipping ... find one at $600 - that's $200 right in your pocket ;-) /megl

The 13" is a thunderous as the rest of the kit, when tuned up nice. Good Luck! It records great.

GREAT thread... and I loved that mp3 84K, the playing was cool too... for $600 (£300) that's just unbelievable... I'm now looking for a kit and am thinking about Bonham's sound (who doesn't?)... If you or anybody else could chime in on my thread I'd be very greatful... afterall that's a big part of the gearslutz community which I am coming to know and love.... http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-mu...ml#post1749947 Thanks in advance guys! |

Great thread guys! In conducting a little internet research on the Zep Set kit, all roads lead here. 84k, fantastic job on the mp3 sample, and impressive recording chain. And Jason, you really nailed the "Levee" sound with that amazingly large room sound. Here's my question: While I love Bonham's sound, my interest in the Zep Set has more to do with finding a fat, straight-ahead rock kit to complement the modern sound of my DW fusion kit. That kit, which I currenty use for recording, has a 22" x 18" kick, and that's the sound I'm familiar with. Although the 26" x 14" kick in the Zep Set is intriguing, I wouldn't necessarily want the booming Bonham kick on all my tracks (though again, it would be great to have the option). Has anyone had success dialing in a more modern (i.e. dry, scooped) kick sound with the 26" x 14"? The alternative would be to see about swapping out a 22" x 18", or 24" x 18" at the factory. Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks! |

| Resurrecting this thread...
Recently I decided to look for a kit to add to the studio that was really big sounding. I wasn't looking to emulate JB, but rather wanted something more modern that was warm and fat, mainly for brit alternative ballad kind of stuff. I remembered reading this thread and how people raved about this kit for not a lot of money. I was able to track down a shell pack for under a grand. In the interest of giving back a little for the ton valuable info that I've gotten here at GS, attached is a sample of what I came up with recording the Zep kit last week. I found that I couldn't get a decent sound out of the snare that came with it, so it's replaced with a TAMA 13x6 Cordia Bubinga snare. Toms and kick are stock, with the stock heads. |
