Omni or Cardioid overheads?

I normally record the overhead of my kit with a pair of russian Oktava mk012 with a cardioid capsule.
I decided to get the omni capsule to get a larger sound.

I got them today, placed the mics , recorded the kit with the omni caps,
then changed to the cardioids without moving anything, keeping the exact same settings.

Listening back, the difference was quite big between the two capsules;
In fact the cardioid sounded much brighter and focused, and the omni were quite dark and dull with less high frequencies.
Is that normal or could there be something wrong with the omni capsules?

Do you guys normally record OH with omni or cardioid mics?
