Show us your kit!

I've seen the "mic'd up studio kits" thread, but I didn't see a thread where drummers could post pics of their own setups.

I often learn a lot about how other drummers are set up, what gear their using, etc...

Here's mine!

Specs:
All of the shells are of the "power" sizes that Yamaha offers.

8/10/12/14/16 toms
22 in. kick

Cymbals:

-Zildjian-

22 inch Earth Ride
18 inch K Custom Dark Crash
18 inch A Custom Crash
15 inch Paper Thin Crash
K/Z Combo Hats
New Beat /Z Combo Hats (not shown...empty spot on the right)
12 inch A Splash
8 inch A Custom Splash

20 inch Wuhan China

I also have a 20 inch Ping Ride and 16 inch Medium Crash not shown.

Snares:

Shown on the kit is the 12 inch Yamaha Musashi snare.

From left to right: An old 15" Slingerland marching snare that I haven't tidied up yet.

14" Ludwig Black Beauty reissue that I bought brand new a couple years ago. This is the snare I use 99% of the time.

14" Yamaha Piccolo

14" Olive Badge Ludwig (I really don't know much about this one)

-Heads-
On the toms you can see Evans G2 coated I'm using for recording, except for the EC2 on the 16". I'm getting such a good sound out of that 16" with the EC2, that I didn't want to change it!

For gigs, all toms have the EC2's on them.

Let's see some more!

If I could find some 15" batter and snare side heads out here (Oahu), I'd LOVE to get started on it. Unfortunately....not so easy, and I've been too lazy to order online.

I have some closer pics if you're interested. I'd love some ideas on what I can do with this thing.

All I know so far is:

1. "Hey, this might be really cool to record a ballad with"
2. THIS snare is LOUD....VERY LOUD...not for the faint of heart!

This is what I've been playing:

...but I have a Tama Starclassic maple kit on the way. I used to have a Starclassic kit and nothing sounds as good to me, records as well, or is as much fun to play, so the Ludwigs are out and the Tama's are coming back.

For snares, I have the following:

Keplinger 5x14 Stainless Steel (8-lug)
Keplinger 5.5x14 Black Iron (Ludwig nickel lugs from the 50's)
'66 5x14 Supraphonic
5x14 maple Keller w/cast hoops that I built
4x12 Tempus Fibreglass

I'm contemplating either a 6.5x14 Ludwig hammered bronze or a Starclassic maple to go with the new kit, too.

I dont have a studio kit or really play drums but my friend Dave is consulting with a young band I have in the studio and brought a few of his Noble Cooley snares with him. Kinda cool...

Not much of a picture, but this is my set. Which started life as a 20-year old Premier kit and was recently overhauled by me with new wrap, lugs and mounting hardware.

Planning on doing some recording experiments this week so I'll probably post a better pic around that time. Here's an old pic taken before the overhaul with my cymbal setup:

Dude, that last snare is a Ludwig Acrolite! Love those drums! Sound killer. In the 70's they often came in a "UFO" case as a beginner's snare drum kit for schools, etc. Came with a pair of sticks, a stand, a "jellyfish" practice pad that fit on the drum, and a Hal Leonard drum book all packed in the UFO case :-) Slams ! I've been wanting another one for years but never buy them when I see them cuz I'm always buying other gear ;-)

Does this Dave happen to be Dave Joyal from Silent Drive? If it is you should tell him that Jordan from The Hurt Process said hi.

Thanks

This is my live kit and it is a set of Ludwig Classic Maples. Kick is 24" x 16", rack tom is 12" x 9" and floor tom is 16" x 16". Snares are an old 18 ply birch 14" x 8" Tama Artwood and a newer 18 ply 14" x 8" Ayotte sugar maple custom snare with wood hoops.

Cymbals in pic are Zildjian K 19" dark crash, Zildjian K 14" master sound hats, 18" Zildjian Constantinople crash and a weird old 22" Zildjian crash and a Sabian 22" Chester Thomson liquid ride.

Since the pic I now use Paiste 2002 15" sound edge hats and a paiste 2002 24" medium ride.

My studio kit are the same sizes as the Luddys but I use an Ayotte custom maple kit with wood hoops.

Hey Collin, how do you like the 24X16 kick?

The reason I ask is 'cause I ordered a new Yamaha maple absolute kit with the same size bass drum. I had to bite my tongue and not say 26X14 (my fav) 'cause I didn't think it would be versatile enough for a studio - and I'm just plain sick of 22X18's - so I went half way with a 24X16 - and have no idea what I'm in for

I dig it. My Ayotte actually has a 24" x 17" and when I orderd that they offered a 24" X 16" and a 24" X 18". Since my kit was custom and I couldn't decide I split the difference.

The Ludwig, as far as I know was offered as either 24" x 14" or 24" X 16" so I went with the deeper one. All I've ever used is 24" kicks. Even my first kit, which was an old Tama Superstar kit from the mid 80's had a 24" kick so I have yet to deviate from that plan. I think you'll really like the 24 as it has a nice, hit you in your chest, thump to it.

Here's a few pics of some of my kits...not really in "playing form" as the Superstars are my practice space kit and the SC Maples were just set up for these pics. I grabbed a few cymbals from the practice it to make it look passable. I'll try to get the rest of the kit's up soon as well as a proper live and studio cymbal set up. Actually, the first pic is a few snares I have ready to go at all times. I wish I had them all together for one pic...

Also, had to throw in one pic of my amp wall...just b/c it was a cool pic.

later,

m

I think this is a simple and beautiful looking kit. What are the shells made of and what are the dimensions? Out of all the kits I've seen on this thread, this would be the one I would choose to play.

Here's a couple simple shots of one of my kits:
Show us your kit!-basic5.jpg
Show us your kit!-img_0195.jpg

Yamaha Beech Custom. I got a killer deal on it my jr year of college during Christmas break... right when I was getting kicked out of music school. 22", 10", 12", 14". Incredibly versatile kit that has served me well in multiple musical settings. The snare is a 14"x4.75" Noble and Cooley Alloy Classic in an atypical finish (the way I like it). Obviously Zildjian cymbals, with a 21" K Constantinople prototype big band ride (this specific variation was never released). The ride is by far my favorite, most valued, most versatile, and most used piece of gear. This 4 piece setup with the ride/crash/hats combo is my most used setup. Extremely basic, but it is more than I need for most musical situations. I also don't like having too big of a setup for multiple reasons- lugging gear, setup/breakdown time, ease of mic placement, less to worry about, and mainly because it lets me play the most musically and creatively. I also often just use only ride/hats and kick/snare, which really make me work and opens up a whole new world of creativity.

The shells are birch with beech reinforcement rings, which was pretty much the staple Premier shell composition for decades. 22x14", 12x8" & 16x15" sizes. I have a 13x10" tom as well but I tend to not use it.

I had a feeling it was an acrolite, and your description is dead on. I think I even have the case around here somewhere. I just never thought about it 'cause I got it so long ago. It's probably gonna turn out to be the best sounding snare I own, and I didn't even know it!

Let's see some more kits!

Just realized all the shots of my kit shots are meant to document mic positions... I'll have to remedy the situation, but in the meantime I like this shot. Makes me want to get over there right now and PLAY!
