I use Smith custom maples.

My main kit consists of one 22" kick and three toms: 10", 13" and 16":

Here is a photo of my drums shot for the Smith catalog... they took both my single kick kits and put together a double-kick set-up just for the photo:

These are the best sounding drums I've ever used... Kellar maple shells and mucho attention to detail during the build... extreme fine quality. We spent time getting the bearing edges just right per the sound I was looking for.... toms are full and rich but with ridiculous attack, and the kicks are like cannons.

I miss my old vintage Ludwig kit that I grew up playing on, but these Smiths are just incredible and fill the void... used Starclassic maples for a brief period too... sold those in a hurry though after experimenting with Smiths... the Tamas were loud with good attack, ok for live playing in loud situations, but the Smiths are infinitely more rich, refined and musical in every regard... they provide the warmth and tone of a vintage kit but with the clarity, depth and cut of a more modern kit... we indeed spent time dialing in the "perfect" blend of these traits during the custom build. I would not record with any other kit at this point.

the first 2 snares of my lifelong collection!

the top one is the Pork Pie 7" x 13" Little Squealer. I bought it in August of 2007, and have loved it ever since.

and the bottom one is the Ludwig 5" x 14" Acrolite from (i think) the 1980s. it is currently not in the best shape possible, and im working on fixing that as i write this.
right now i took the original throw off switch and butt-end for the snare off, and getting them ready for polishing and everything. so right now ive got some cheap replacements on it just to hold me over for a little bit.

heres some individual pictures of each of them.

This just came in the mail today. It's a 7x14 DW solid maple shell with die-cast hoops and tube lugs. Haven't messed with it too much other than tuning it up a bit and giving it a few taps but I think it will be promising. I've always wanted a radio king type snare and I figured this might do the trick.

That kit looks great.

Do you have any more pics of tracking the last record?

Yo RB, did you get another JN or is this the same one you were going to get awhile back?

I still never bought a Ludwig or Lud-alike, figuring there's probably a great high end version of a black beauty made by some small company. If the JN KILLS, I'm gonna skip all the middlemen snares. How is it? Differrent from an old BB? Better?

It looks like it would be killer!

Just gorgeous kits you have Roundbadge. Where in the hell did you raise the funds to buy them all. A lowly student like myself can't imagine there being that much money at my disposal. Lucky to be able to buy as you please.

Great to drool over them too. I want one in particular and I WILL kill for it.

grats.

Here's my 50's Gretsch Roundbadge Jazz turned rock kit, this one's been played behind Bon Scott.

20"
16"
13"

Also a couple of snares...

This one is an interesting number, a Ludwig 'Colloseum' Snare. Massive crack!

and my beautiful brass Luddy.

I also have a Ludwig Classic Maple kit in a silver sparkle finish, great for live work I've found.

It sounds like the older warmer/rounder more old school 30's ,40's BB's.
My only beef is you pretty much have to use fairly low strand snares, nothing over 20..the beds are deep but not super wide

Still like my 70's 80's BB's though.
the kits are all over the place right now.sold the Luddie Stainless and Craviotto's[helped pay for the new API console].
People just love the old stuff...myself included

Wow. I had to do a double take...that is the evil twin of my 6 1/2 x 14 hand hammered tube lug Black Beauty. I am sure it is a beautiful sounding drum...for a copy.

Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute Nouveau in Yellow Sparkle Fade...this thing is the sex. Bass is 24x18 and sounds like a punch to the heart.

Question: Black Beauty brass/brass tube lug in 5x14 or 6.5x14? It will be my first Ludwig snare purchase...

Fun thread!
Hmmm...5 x 14 will give you a bit more "snap" due to the shorter distance between the batter and res heads. It is perhaps a bit more versatile (for jazz and delicate brush work). If you are playing more high volume stuff for rock...I would go for the 6 1/2 x 14 (which I have and LOVE). It can be a bit aggressive when I swing or get quiet...

Dude, stop.

If it feels good pounding my kit "too" hard that is all the reason I need. If I want my record to sound like I sound when I pound the **** out of my kit because it feels good; then that is all the reason I need.

There is no error. If I want to make a record that sounds like I sat back and pondered, "Hmm... yes... yes, this would make for a big drum sound." I will. I want to play hard, and I want to sound like I play hard.

Nirvana is a fine example.

I threw a wood hoop on my knurled bronze DW snare. It gives the drum a drier, warmer quality. The shell is 6.5x14 inches.
