Still a novice but where the older felt kick pedal thingy

still very new to drums so take it easy on me please. ive noticed there's no older style kick pedal felts being sold (at least at GC) that came with my tama rockstar kit... I do see harder felt types and many other types but not the regular felt ones i saw growing up etc. anyone know what's up? i like the boominess of the old style and its just easier to fake my kick drum. thanks

Yeah vintage bomber is real close so you know what I mean but that seems too big...? Does anyone know if they just don't make the older style anymore? Odd. I want fluffy but that seems overkill. I mean I just suck at the kick anyway but. I hide in the fluff a bit but not too much...

so i still have my old poofy felt one that came with the kit. its worn down on two sides so it still has some life in it by turning it. its just weird that i cant find these types anywhere ...I want poof but not fluff. im tempted to buy a vintage bomber but i can see its very fluffy and thumpy. i realize tuning is key to the bass drum but id like a new poofy one ..arrrgg

Get a dental pick and fluff up your old one where it is compresses. This is what piano technicians do to the felt hammers when "voicing" a piano.

What's a dental pick? I did buy a modern more firm beater but it's certainly not the same. As I listened back to recordings it seems the older non firm one I have sounds too thumpy anyway... Gonna have to just get used to newer versions.. I could swear these older types were available but since there not ..no choice.

I primarily record 'vintage' sounding drum tracks. And I use a plastic beater. It's perfectly acceptable. It's a very very minor element in the grand scheme of the sound.

I think Yamaha still makes regular felt beaters. If not, the generic ones in catalogs will do fine. You could also get a felt patch for your bass drum. Evans makes one that works quite well.

the vintage bomber is great! Very close to the old lambswool beaters

I love mine, but I use it mostly as an effect. It's very soft.

here is a 'normal' felt beater:

Gibraltar beater

I like the ones that are reversible - felt on one side and hard plastic on the other

Great! Thanks. Seems like there's many ways around the older kind. The beater here looks close but I think is harder material.

the felt beaters I know of are all pretty firm, and that's how I remember them from the Old Days meaning the 70's -80's

then you have something like the Vintage Bomber that is positively "fluffy" and really goes back to the 30's and 40's when such things were actually used.

Danmar has a 'long haired' beater that is also quite fluffy.

I guess you are looking for something "in-between". Not sure if I have ever seen any felt ones that are not hard felt.

One other thing you could check out is the DW HardCore beater. This is a hard plastic center with a foam surround. When you play soft, the sound is soft. When you hit hard, the foam compresses and you get more of the solid core sound. It's an interesting concept, don't know if it really works or not.

The thing the dentist sticks in your mouth to scrape the teeth. You can find them in the small tools section of most hardware stores. Harbor Freight sells them cheap as well. Not dental grade, but they're handy for many things.

I have one of the Vater things. I use it on my Safari kit for jazz. Gives that dull thump. Different than the felt beaters of the '60s or early '70s.
