Worst drum sounds ever!

In honor of this thread...

your favorite drum sound?

...i thought it would be fun to show examples of the worst drums sounds on hit songs or records.

Here is mine...

Collective Soul - Shine (Studio Version) - YouTube

This may just be a poor mix, but every time i hear this song, all i can hear is how bad the drums are for the song.

I think the drum sound fits the song. It's all terrible.

Most of my least favorite drums would be electronic, especially Linn drums and Simmons. The cavernous snare reverb, gated toms sound of the '80s would be a close second. And the drums on any Hair Metal ballad would qualify as well. Too many examples to narrow it down to one tune.

Great idea for a thread though.

It's gonna be subjective.
Also as a long time forum contributor (not just this forum), 'worst' threads are just an excuse for negative energy and quickly descend into argument I find.
Worst song, worst drummer, worst band, worst drum sound...... why give it any oxygen?
Worst anything is best ignored and time is better spent discussing and trying to achieve 'best' outcomes.

How about 'worst opinion-based thread about drum sounds?'

I don't know, I think there's some levity to be had, as long as it doesn't get too serious. Some of the 'worst band' threads are hilarious. Some of my own performances and drum sounds are pretty laughable anyway. Maybe least favorite is more appropriate?

to me it's a general sound: the syndrum

that "be-ooo! be-ooo!" sound. OMG how I hated them.

Once I saw a very good drummer demoing them at Manny's on 48th St. on a mixed acoustic/syndrum kit. Every now and then he would smack his tom - his real acoustic tom and "WHOOMPH!". It was thrilling.

I had been already waiting years for electronic drums to arrive and when the Syndrum came out, I realized I would have to wait a few MORE years!

Of course today, these things are worth a small fortune. And I believe at least one company makes sample packs of them.

Ringo's drums on "Rain" - that snare makes me cringe every time. Actually his playing is odd on it too. Not one of their best tracks.

Well, Rolling Stone also panned Led Zeppelin's first album. They have had lots of "interesting" opinions over the years.

Anyway, I think counter examples are just as valuable as examples. I'm a fan of learning vicariously. I don't think pointing out an undesirable result is inherently a "negative" thing. We've all got good and bad work, we're human.

One other point is that a great "sounding" recording doesnt mean a hit or even prevent a hit. Similar to the "Hit songs with out of tune vocals" thread.

I dunno.
Do you learn by trying to emulate great work, or just by noting bad work?
For me it's usually the former.

They're not mutually exclusive. I find it can all be insightful one way or another. One thing in particular it can teach me is why I don't like something, and then I can better learn how to avoid it in my own work.
