Gretsch Renown vs Gretsch Catalina vs Sonor Enforcer

Your thoughts about these three drum sets -

GRETSCH RENOWN MAPLE ROCK SET (24"x16" Bass Drum, 13"x09" Tom Toms, 16"x16" Floor Tom),

GRETSCH CATALINA CLUB ROCK MAHOGANY (13" x 9" tom, 16" x 16" & 18" x 16" floor toms, 24" x 18" bass drum, 14" x 6.5" snare drum. Mahogany shells)

SONOR ESSENTIAL FORCE BIRCH (22"x20" Bass Drum (not drilled), 10"x6,5" - 12"x07" Tom Toms, 14"x12" - 16"x14" Floor Toms, 14"x6,5" Snare Drum)

Which of these would suit better for recording and getting the Underoath type of drum sound? Maybe you could give some advice concerning shells - what type of wood is suitable for which styles of music? Comments about the bass drums and their sizes would also be appreciated!

Thank you!

My guess would be that Maple is the most widely-used wood, so maybe it's the most versatile? I like Birch myself. There's a thread about 22" vs 24" kick a bit further down, and everyone has their own preference. I like both. The virgin bass drum would be a big plus for me. Different drummers keep their kicks at different angles. The Sonor has the most toms, so a variety of drummers used to different-sized kits would have more options as well. So, if it were for my studio I'd choose the Sonor. They're all good drums though.

Good luck.

Steve

The Renown will eat the others for breakfast!

The wood in the others is not of the same quality as the wood in the Renowns.

I own one myself, and it holds its own against my Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Noveau, which is a lot more expensive, and is also a great drumkit.

I also vote for Renown. BTW, anyone know where I can order just a floor tom for a good price? 16"x16" or 18"x16". I'm trying to avoid Guitar Center.
