Thread Starter | How to get this snare sound
just wondering what kind of snare this might be (in the attached clip), and what I could do to get a sound like it... (what head to use, tuning, mic/mic position for the snare and room, etc) ![]() |

It's probably heavily processed (or even more likely sample-augmented/replaced).. but I'd be surprised if you couldn't get that sound with a wide-open Supra with a light to medium weight head on it (Ambassador or CS in Remo-speak). I'd try pointing the mic a little more toward the rim from center to get more of that ring in there (try to find a ringy but not honky spot).

No drum expert here, but it sounds like a deeper snare, perhaps 5.5" or 6". Batter head tuned to Ab, reso head to Eb (matched up the first two fundamentals by sweeping a narrow band EQ). Guessing it's a single-ply head due to the exaggerated ringing.

To me it sounds like a Brass shell&single ply head. The whole kit sounds a bit triggered though |

Here's my guess... triggered sample (back beat is a different sample than the fills), metal shell (maybe a supra but more likely steel or brass), top head tuned to F# (snare tension takes it up a half step to sound a G), coated ambassador, bottom head very loose, diplomat snare, snares not too tight, miced from the top a few inches up from the rim pointed at the center.

Disagree. Sounds much more like an evans coated g1 to me! But most engerners perfer remo because there old grumpy and stuck in there ways. Kinda like your grampa still using brill creame. Not his fault he doesnt know any better.

haha 'no drum expert here' -- good one! thanks for all of the advice -- I attached the oh/room track separate from the snare in case that helps elucidate

I once ordered a set of Remos for a school I was working at. The buyer decided Evans would be better and got those instead. The kids tore through 3 of them rim to rim in the first month. But, he knew better than me, so that's what they got.

Definitely sounds like a deep, metal snare of some kind. I'm a Remo guy. I've tried others and am always disappointed. To me, a coated CS for snares, and pinstripes for toms work on nearly any drum. I most recently tried Aquarian Resonse 2 heads on my toms and they are just alright. I plan to go back to pinstripes on my next purchase for that warmth. This is mostly personal preference, however. I put a superkick II on both of my kick drums and am very happy with those.

I did start finding Remo a little inconsistent.. both Evans and Aquarian seem to have better QC. I just don't 'know' all the Evans lines.. still talk in Remo terms.

Sounds like a 6.5" supraphonic with an Ambassador, high tension (not cranked), with NO moon gels or any dampening. If you're looking for that wide open sound, i would run a 1 ply head without muffling. Black Beauties can put out that sound if you dont strain the snares too tight. Any Metal snare around 5.5"-6.5" should do the trick. |

Definitely sounds like a G1 head to my ears. Love those heads on certain drums. The room track is playing a big part in the overall sound.
