Thread Starter | Ludwig Large Classic Lugs
I just bought a set of Classic Maples (24/13/16 in ebony lacquer!) and they have the small lugs. I think it is sexier than the large ones because it shows more of the gorgeous finish. I see ebay auctions where they seem to be using "large classic lugs" as a selling point. What, if anything, is better about the large lugs? Is it just a common preference, or is there something more functional or durable about them? Thanks!

Large heavy lugs dampen the resonance of the shell more than small and light lugs. You like that or you just don't. For me the difference is close to hairsplitting.

![]() they could just be 'stating' the lug type as pure information, too I wouldn't worry that there was something 'wrong' with them. I never heard anybody complain about durability or sound, though C.r.a.p.'s reasoning about a small difference in resonance makes sense. I read somewhere that some Ludwig kits shipped with small lugs on the small drums and large lugs on the bigger ones- probably mostly as a visual accommodation. Proportionality.

If you order a current model Classic Maple kit, the large classic lugs are an up charge. The Mini Classic lugs are what come on them standard. The sought after Ludwig kits of old all came standard with the large lugs (that's all that was available). One can get a pretty penny for vintage period correct large lugs and t-handle bass rods too. |

Thanks for the information, folks! I couldn't imagine that there would be more than preference involved in the many listings of large lugs. Maybe, people feel that it looks more vintage with large lugs also. At any rate, the drums are great, and I do not regret the purchase. Got a good deal. They were apparently ordered and never picked up. I'm guessing that the music store received a good deposit upon order, which is why they let them go for $1100.

I think it's just the traditional styling.
