Remo rapid tuning pedal

https://picasaweb.google.com/1118286...at=directlink:

I have a very interesting pedal made by Remo called a rapid tuning pedal. Here is a link to photos of it. It tunes a Rototom up and down in pitch by rocking the pedal. I was able to find a post about the pedal from 2010 that stated that it is rare. Anyone have an idea of its value?

Do you have a Roto Tom for it?

This was kind of a failed experiment back in the 80s; some schools were using larger Roto Toms as tympani (cheaper, smaller) and the tuning pedal was much more in line with tympani normally tuning.

Are you looking to sell it? Is that why you are keen to know it's potential value?

I spoke with some of the engineers at Remo about this once; this was an in-house invention of theirs that never got perfected, and was dropped; only a handful of prototypes were ever made for trade shows and endorser photo shoots (there is a Modern Drummer ad featuring Bill Bruford standing next to one, sipping tea). Evidently the linkage rod would tend to bind up so the glissando would not flow smoothly, resulting in jerky, unmusical, pitch shifts...

So, yes, they are very rare and no I don't think they are worth that much since they don't really work well. That said I have always wanted to find one to tear apart and see if it couldn't be improved to the point of usability, since the basic concept of a pedal-operated roto tom would be useful... PM me if you would like to sell it.

So you're saying that it doesn't work and it's not worth much, so you'll happily take it off the OPs hands?

Interesting.

I havent decided whether I am selling it or not. I think its pretty cool, though. I found the video of Chad Sexton playing his, he plays it at 1:46

I'm cleaning up my garage and I have 2 of these. One 16" and one 18". I am going to keep one, and sell one. Mine were new in the box, and work GREAT! They are constantly variable, and will lock anywhere by depressing the toe. (one pedal doesn't lock).
