Our newest snare

Hey, just thought I'd show you guys the newest snare my small company has been working on. 8x14 - 15 ply maple, kinda a fatty.

It is going to be my main recording and tour snare. I tried something bizarre with the tube lugs, making them have a small offset.

Almost done, just waiting on a couple small parts!

Our new website will be up soon too! The current one I made in a weekend... not very good to say the least.

I like the look of the small offset in the lugs. Gives the drum a motion-like effect.

Awesome, will you be able to post some samples of it in action? Would love to hear how it sounds.

Sure looks like a beaut. As sluts we want to know details. Edges? Beds? Vents? Throw? Rims? Heads? Why 15 ply? What's for Dinner?

Not a fan of how it looks to be honest. The vent hole sticks out in a bad way because it's chromed whereas the rest of the hardware is satin. Also, I can see the offset lugs being really impractical/annoying in general, because it requires you to have two sets of different length tension rods.

Hey thanks for all the feedback, good and bad. Well, I finished it yesterday, tuned it up, and was blown away by how it sounded. The snare I was using before was an Acrylic shell, and this one sounds so different.

I will post samples soon, didn't have time last night. I don't have the best room, but I'll slap an i5 or 57 on there to give you guys an idea.

So, the edges are 45's with a tiny flat on the top, instead of a super sharp point (pretty typical I think). The beds are pretty shallow, there are 4 small vents on it. Rims are typical triple flanged hoops powder coated gray. I never really cared for evans heads, but I put a 300 Hazy and a Power Center on the batter.

I chose a 15-ply shell basically because it was a little thicker than a typical 8 or 10 ply snare, but wasn't as pricey as a 20-ply. It definitely adds to the volume of the initial attack of the snare, and increases the pitch that the shell resonates at. It is also a little deeper, lowering that pitch a little as well...

As far as having two different T-rod lengths, I didn't think it was a big deal as we have plenty of each size anyways, its not like I had to order two full sets of each. I can just custom order whatever I need, so I don't really see any kind of issue with that.

The breather holes are also placeholders, the place that does our powder coating is backlogged and I decided to toss those in rather than have naked holes for now. Once the new gray ones come in, I'll be putting those in. The picture doesn't adequately show it, but the shell is so sparkly that the chromed parts kind of sit there just fine without looking out of place. I agree though, it bugs me and they will be fixed someday (soon hopefully)!

I do appreciate all sorts of feedback, especially on these concept snares that I try. First and foremost I try to make them SOUND GOOD. No one gives a shit how it looks if it sounds like crap. The next thing I care about is durability. The first snare I built went on 4 tours and still sounds and looks great, which I am excited about, especially because the owner (my friend) is not very careful with things.

This snare was a great learning experience and will be on my kit for a while, until I build another one for myself

Thanks again, I'll probably make a post when we get our new website up and running.

So here is the sample and how I set up the mic. I did'nt spend too much time on this but it's okay.

I did some off-center hits, then centered hits, then a little stupid lick.

If you so desire feel free to use the sample any way you want.

Would you tell me how much you charge for the new snare? Also, do you have a website?

Thank you.

Our current website is www.boomdogdrums.com. However, it is fairly lame as I built it in a weekend... we currently have a new website under construction by some professionals . Until then, please excuse the website please!

Sure thing, it depends on the options you want, but typically a snare we build will start around 450.00 due to the parts we use in our construction. We use really high quality parts that are made in the USA, and really focus on the sound, durability, and overall quality of the drum. The snare I just built as actually for my personal use, but we'd be happy to build you a similar one (or even exactly the same). If you want a quote for that, shoot me an email (address below!).

What kind of snare were you thinking of getting? Size/Finish/Color of hardware etc?

You can also email me: david AT boomdogdrums DOT com
(hopefully that tricks any kind of bots looking for email addresses)
