Big shallow kick drums

I have an old Hayman 24x14 kick drum, love it but the geek in me wants to go bigger. I live in New Zealand so I can't just go and rent something like this to see if it will be too over the top.

Can anyone link to any clips of recordings of 26, 28, or 30 inch by 14 or 16 inch depth? Either soloed or in a mix, preferably not miked from the inside.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Listen to Led Zeppelin records; Bonham used a 14x26 bass drum on all of the recordings except for the first album.

"The Geek" may respond well to you suggesting recording your current kick sound and supplementing/replacing it with a triggered sound using Drumagog or even a hard trigger if it's for studio use.

You may even get some respect from said "geek" for suggesting a more technical approach to your issue rather than battling with the unpridictable world of physics.

Hell, he may be so impressed to ask your input on another issue......but I doubt it.

Same with all the Vanilla Fudge and Beck, Bogart and Appice recordings 14x26's

The best kick drum I ever tracked was a 22x14 Premier from the 50's.

Shallow kick drums rule. Attack, resonance, it's all there.

26x14, just as great as long as the drummer knows how to play one.

24x14, just as great as long as the drummer knows how to play one.

I have two 24x20 kicks, and a 22x22... I personally like the 22x22 the best. I was never that big a fan of big diameter kicks as you have to (or should at least) make the pedal's beater extend out to about the middle of the head, and when they extend that long, you may lose speed and control (depending on your pedal) simply due to leverage, but... you also get harder hits due to that same leverage.

So if speed isn't particularly concerning, or you don't mind if the beater doesn't hit the center of the head, then go large. I'll stick to my 22x22

You can make your 22" seem bigger by trimming back the stands that surround it.

Or just turn the lights out, tell 'em it's 26", and jam away.

Many thanks to those who have suggested some things to listen to. Anyone else got anything they have recorded with a kick drum like this?

These sorts of kick drums have a very different sound than your regular 22x18, unsure why some of you seem to take objection to me asking about them...

I've been playing with the idea of having a 23x15 kick built for me by Trick drums. Seems like a good compromise between the feel of a 22 with the quicker punch of a 14, but with a slightly bigger sound than what a regular 22x14 would produce.

22x20 kicks and the like that are now popular among several brands might sound quite booming and deep, but the note doesn't escape from the drum quickly enough for my tastes. They could be cool for hip hop or stoner metal!

The 24x17 on my Oak kick is a great sounding drum! I'm guessing you're talking about your Yamaha, Guitfiddle.

For some reason, I'm turned off by 18" depth kicks now. Maybe because they're such a standard.

Drumming for me is about looks - I want to look good when I sit behind my Ludwig 26" kick... I don't care so much for the sound... If I look good the recording will sound great! That's my two cents...

20x14 here.

Personally, I find anything deeper than 17" sounds 'phasey.' Especially on 20" kicks. I like the 14" depths! It's tough to beat a well built 24x14 or 20x14 for smalls.

Bigger is better is a myth.
