Live drum overhead mic?

Hi all,

Bit of an unusual question...

OK here's the deal using one mic for vocals and drum overheads...yeah i know not the best scenario... but these are mostly small gigs and I'm trying to get the best for both sources...(have a mic in kick also).

The SM58 i'm using is obviously "isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise."

Is there a better option to get more of the kit...but not the rest of the 3-piece group, while maintaining a decent vocal signal?

Thanks much

Are you referring to vocals from the drummer as well as the kit coming through the same mic? If so, then I'd look for an omni-directional microphone and keep it close to the drummer's mouth/head to maximize the vocals and drums whilst picking up less of the band.

You might want to try the EV 635a. It's the same capsule as the RE50, minus the wind screen. Very dependable and versatile (underrated) omni mic, low noise, good clarity, can be found used for cheap. It's also really tough, so good for live gigs, you can hammer nails with em.
