drum room : 23' by 10' or 12' by 10' ?

Hi everybody,
I currently have a 23' by 10' (with 7'4" ceiling) treated rehearsal/recording space. I am thinking of making two rooms out of it so I can have separate tracking and control rooms.
My priority is to have the best drum sound possible.
Should I leave it as it is, or take the plunge and split it up ?

Bigger is generally better for drums - but if you really like the separation, then 12x10 is workable. I had a very similar size to work with (about 26x19 total) - and decided to split it. Ended up with a drum/amp room about 12x10.. the trick is that you just have to know you won't get much room sound..

If you look around here at GS.. find the threads on Tchad Blake's drum recording techniques (which, I believe, Tchad comments on himself)... small rooms, VERY dead... add reverb/distortion/whatever after the fact.

I would kill for such a long room

I would leave it. For drums, usually bigger is better and with such a low ceiling, you need all the length you can get

but check out the many threads here on "one room studio". There are some advantages to not having that wall and window.

the world is your control room! If it's good enough for Alliare...

if you do decide to divide it, try to angle or slant the walls or cheat it in favor of the live room, 12 X 10 is very close to a box, and squares are bad

Me too. Bigger is better with drum rooms. You can always make a big room sound small, but you can't make a small room sound big.
