So I hadn't heard of this guy until I decided to purchase his "language of Drumming" instructional DVD.

I don't normally get excited for an instructional DVD but I'm just so blown away!

After watching it through a few times, I can honestly say that he is one of the most brilliantly disciplined and creative drummers I have seen in a long time.

The DVD has fantastic cinematography (Which is saying a lot for an instructional DVD), and he's got a wonderfully off beat sense of humor that keeps the video both educational and entertaining.

Couple that with the fact that the guy is just outstanding on the drum kit...I'm really mad that I haven't heard of this guy before.

I don't know...I just wanted to share my excitement over finding a good, under-recognized drummer.

I really think guys like Benny Greb, Gavin Harrison, Antonio Sanchez and others are taking the art of drumming to new heights.

I stumbled across Benny Greb when I was looking for alternative cymbals. His playing made me want to buy the Meinl Trash Hats. What I appreciated most about his style was that it wasn't all 'small' stuff.

Some guys with great chops play lots of fast notes, and end up leaving out the big ideas, but Greb's playing was very 'accessible' and tasteful.

Here is a video of him jamming with Pete Locket, a tabla player, with some very fake Swiss Alps scenery:

Actually, that and the rest of the video were shot on location. It's just shot with a good camera and they probably have some artificial lighting. But they are actually there in the alps .

Well, in all of the outdoor shots they are using dynamic mics (Sm7, 57's, etc) with windscreens...so that's what accounts for the lack of ambient noise.

I've done a few outdoor recordings before, and you really don't get the outdoor ambient sounds that you would think unless you are using an omni mic with the gain cranked.

Honestly Benny Greb is my favorite drummer and biggest drumming inspiration. I hope I'm not the only here that thinks that his drum sound indoors is absolutley incredible I play sonor drums and meinl cymbals but I don't have the mics or the room they had to record that!!
