Great advice from everybody. Thanks a lot! Update: Just picked up a Ludwig Element (I think that's the model) kit from craigslist for a very, very good price. It had been played maybe 3-4 times by a guy who bought it then got laid off. It includes a 22x18 kick, 8x7, 10x8, 12x9, and 16x14 toms (or something like that), and the hardware, including a kick pedal. I know it's not vintage, but right now I don't really care and just want to get started fast and cheap. I'm more interested in style and technique anyway. Besides, I'm sure that with the right set up and playing, they'll be able to sound somewhat vintage. I'm trying to get a good trade in on one of my R121s to get a snare, snare stand, used hats, and a hihat stand. Once I do that, I'm continuing with my plan to only sett up the snare, hats, and kick. I've got a pro coming over tonight to show me how to set up my kick. |

| I want to be a Motown drummer!
Get a pair of 5b drum sticks and a pair of small ones too like a 4a or so. 4a's are bigger? |

So I've had about eight lessons now, and have practiced several days a week for a couple months. Mostly rudiments, simple beats, and just trying to build up independance in my feet and arms. I'm going to post a video shortly in hopes that someone can give me some pointers. My teacher is really good, but maybe someone esle will notice/emphasize a different aspect of playing.
