Thread Starter | thinking of selling my Yamaha RC9000 for a Ludwig classic maple
I tend to go more and more towards a vintage sound (if that means anything) in terms of drums, and though I really like my RC9000, I think it is not designed for the sound I have in mind. I play with very low tuning, and rather mat/dry settings, so I favour sharp attack rather than long decay these days, though I may need to tune the kit higher and more resonant for some tunes. Anyhow, I like the old Ludwig drums, and I am aware that the new ones will not sound the same, but they seem to have more character than the yamaha. The Yamaha is an excellent do it all kit IMO, but mine has deep toms and sometimes the sound is hard to control, besides I'd like a Maple kit, what do you think, is it just apples for oranges or what?

The RC is a great kit but definitely more modern sounding than the Ludwig. | |

Keep the RCs - and pick up a Luddie kit as well... then you have the best of both worlds, and it's sluttier. "-) |

| Ditto. The Yamaha's are amazing, and vintage Ludwig are reasonably priced. Buy a shell pack.

Drums only, no stands. Vintage stands are usually rickety. Some collectors will pay a lot for vintage stands to complete a kit however. So the cheapest way to get a vintage sound is to buy a vintage kit with limited or no hardware. You can use your Yamaha cymbal, hi-hat and snare stands (much better). A tom arm (holder) for the Ludwig would be useful however. |
