Calexico like kick drum sound

Hi all,

does anyone knows the trick use by Calexico ?

it's a 20' bass drum , the resonnace (back) skin as no hole, there is a mike inside the bass drum (witch ?) and another one outside of course

wonderful sound, attack and woooof . Not so far from J Bonham (more high), not so far too from Billy martin (Mesdeski Martin and Wood).... The 3 drummers I like in fact all have a full skin (no holes)

do you, Gearslutz guys, use this kind of trick in studio and how ( mics, phase , etc.....)
