My heads need replacing and I'm going for med-high attack and good resonance so I'm torn between Aquarian Response II's and Remo Clear Emperor's for my 13" and 18" toms. On my snare I'm using Evans G2's that came with the snare but it's about time to replace it and I'd like to try something else. What are your fav tom and snare heads for live gigs? |

I like single ply heads live because they are substantially louder and have a more open sound. I like Aquarian heads because they have a slightly more focused sound than Remo or Evans and because they tune up easier and hold their tune better. So I'd say Aquarian Texture Coated, or my personal choice which is a Aquarian Modern Vintage Medium. The MVM has a thicker coating so it's more controlled than the MVT or an Ambassador, but still louder than any double ply head.

Not a fan of Aquarians, so I'd suggest Emperors. The only thing about Emperors is that they need a little more "nudging" to open up than the Ambassadors. Of course the trade off is they last longer, generally speaking. What kind of drums are we talking about? |

I don't know what music you are playing, but I have tested a lot of skins and for rock drumming I always come back to Remo Clear Emperors and a Remo Emperor X on the snare drum. You really gotta try out a Emperor X on the snare drum, makes every snare sound rock, even my cheap Pearl Export Snare drum

As you can see everyone has wildly different tastes. These are based on their technique and their specific drums. I prefer Evans G2, coated for a dark sound and clear for a modern rock sound. Try something that is within your budget out. With proper tuning you can make anything sound decent until they wear out and you try something else.
