Live Electro House Kick (Sub Kick - Vs. SPDS) & Mic Selection

Hi all,
My live band is heavily influenced by electro house music and I am trying to get a sound that would be comparable to a standard low frequency range electro kick.

The Sub kick mic is an option, but the frequency it resonates at cannot be tuned between songs.
SPDS is another option, I would load the tuned 808 kick for each song into the unit and hook up an acoustic drum trigger to our drummer's kick drum.

Also, wondering about micing and mic placement. We were thinking of micing the kick drum at the front head for the attack, and either use the sub kick mic for the lows or the spds directly to the board for the load 808s.

Which mics would you recommend for the attack of the kick?
Do we have any other options other than Sub Kick, SPDS and just a backing track with an 808 (which is what we are using right now)?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

For the attack of the kick, I recommend something like an Heil pr30 or pr40 or if you've got the means, drop 500 for a Beyerdynamic m88 (my favorite).

As for that low end you want, I HIGHLY suggest some sort of drum trigger setup.

both are great options. stay away from playing to an 808 back track. you lose the feel of the show by playing to a low frequency metronome. i would probably lean toward triggering.

I would go with the triggering from the sampler.

I used to trigger from my acoustic kit into a sampler. Such a snap to create different tunings and setups and save them into presets.

Not only can you get the sounds you are now thinking of, you can get sounds that you haven't thought of yet. You can put patch changes or whole sequences on a single pad and trigger these events at will.

maybe for some song you would like to change the sound to something completely different. For another song, trigger the 808 sound with the kick and the snare!
